Indonesia Faces Criticism for Visa Denial to Israeli Gymnasts Amid Global Response

Indonesia’s Minister of Sport, Erick Thohir, has issued a statement in response to the international backlash following the denial of visas to the Israeli national gymnastics team. The team was scheduled to participate in the World Championships set to take place in Jakarta.

The International Olympic Committee has urged a halt to all international sporting events in Indonesia. This recommendation arises after the country’s controversial decision to bar Team Israel, leading the IOC to end discussions regarding Indonesia’s potential hosting of future Olympic events.

In a statement released on Thursday, Thohir defended Indonesia’s stance.

“We adhere to the principle of maintaining security, public order, and the public interest in hosting every international event,” Thohir stated.

During a press conference held the following day, Thohir elaborated on the government’s position.

“This is indeed part of maintaining our nation’s dignity, in line with the 1945 constitution,” he said, referencing comments made to the Indonesian news outlet, Detikcom. “We must be an independent nation, but at the same time, we must also be a nation that maintains global security… this is something that is still under discussion.”

Historical Context of Indonesia’s Stance on Israeli Participation

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has consistently showcased its support for the Palestinian cause. The prospect of Israeli athletes participating in events within its borders has sparked significant opposition and protests across the country.

Previously, Indonesia lost the right to host the Under-20 World Cup in football after the governor of Bali refused to allow Team Israel to participate in a match during a 2023 tournament. Furthermore, the country withdrew from hosting the Association of National Olympic Committees World Beach Games after the involvement of Israel became contentious.

Reactions from Global Sports Leaders

Morinari Watanabe, the president of the International Gymnastics Federation, addressed the situation during the world championships. He highlighted the significance of maintaining a separation between sports and politics.

“I agree with the statement of the IOC,” Watanabe remarked. “Sports is separate from politics. All athletes have an equal right to participate in the sports event. The IOC and FIG must protect that right. This is for the Olympic charter we are writing.”

Watanabe expressed regret that FIG could not ensure the safety and rights of the Israeli gymnasts. Nevertheless, he recognized the necessity for governments to prioritize the safety of all participating athletes.

“We heard from the Indonesian government that this was a measure to ensure the safety of participating athletes, including one country’s athletes, and also people of Jakarta city. Thus, the reasoning here is not political. This is what we are hearing,” Watanabe stated.

Broader Implications for Israeli Athletes

This recent sanction adds to a growing list of restrictions faced by Israeli sports teams and fans in various international contexts.

The Israel Premier Tech cycling team has been barred from participating in the upcoming Giro dell’Emilia race scheduled for October 4, primarily due to fears of potential pro-Palestinian protests disrupting the event.

In September, reports surfaced indicating that UEFA was considering suspending Israel from participation in its Europa League tournaments amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino later confirmed no disciplinary action would be taken against the Israeli team.

Infantino reportedly met privately with Jibril Rajoub, the Palestinian soccer federation’s leader, to praise his organization for its resilience.

Moreover, fans of Israeli sports teams have faced increasing barriers. Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters, for instance, are prohibited from attending a Europa League match scheduled in Birmingham, England, on November 6, following previous incidents of violence against them during matches, such as an attack in Amsterdam.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Sports and Politics

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the intersection of sports and politics remains a contentious issue. Events like Indonesia’s visa denial demonstrate the ongoing complexities nations face when balancing domestic beliefs with international sporting commitments.

In an era where sports can unite or divide, this incident highlights broader international tensions and raises important questions about the future of athletic participation on the global stage.

It remains to be seen how these dynamics will evolve and whether future international sporting events will be shaped by political considerations. The global community continues to watch closely, hoping for a resolution that honors both the principles of sport and the deeply held beliefs of nations worldwide.
