The jet, named X-BAT, boasts remarkable capabilities. It can take off vertically, ascend to altitudes of 50,000 feet, fly over 2,000 nautical miles, and perform both strike and air defense missions using an advanced onboard system called Hivemind. Designed for operation from various platforms—be it naval vessels, small islands, or makeshift locations—the X-BAT can function where traditional fighter jets cannot, although details about its speed remain classified.

Armor Harris, the Senior Vice President of Aircraft Engineering at Shield AI, emphasized the critical nature of addressing the threats posed by the Chinese military. He noted that the Chinese anti-access aerial denial strategy puts American airbases at risk by aiming to incapacitate aircraft before they can even take off. As Harris stated, the focus has shifted; rather than competing in stealth, the strategy pivots toward preemptively targeting aircraft.

Compact and Versatile Design

The X-BAT is engineered with a compact design, allowing three units to fit in the space of a single legacy fighter or helicopter. This offers commanders enhanced flexibility when launching missions, especially from constrained environments.

Harris elaborated on the historical context of U.S. military aviation, noting that for decades, efforts focused on enhancing stealth and survivability during flight. However, this has left ground assets vulnerable. The key to counteracting this vulnerability, as he believes, lies in mobility. The X-BAT represents a unique vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fighter, a rarity in today’s military development landscape.
