Authorities are investigating a disturbing pattern of violence connected to a suspect in the murder of a congressional intern in Washington, D.C. Police report that just days after the intern’s tragic death, a 17-year-old girl was also fatally shot.
Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old intern for Representative Ron Estes, a Republican from Kansas, was fatally shot on June 30. He succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital the following day. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the incident occurred on the 1200 block of 7th Street NW.
Further compounding the tragedy, on July 4, authorities announced the death of 17-year-old Zoey Kelley, who was killed in a separate incident. Police identified Naqwan Lucas as a suspect in both cases, and he now faces charges related to Kelley’s murder.
Charges Filed in Connection with Both Murders
After being named as a prime suspect in Tarpinian-Jachym’s murder, Lucas was charged with the premeditated first-degree murder of Kelley. The authorities have reported that he remains at large, adding to the community’s concerns over safety.
Law enforcement responded to a distress call at a residence in Washington, D.C., where they discovered Kelley unconscious from a gunshot wound. Tragically, medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

In early September, two teenagers, Jailen Lucas and Kelvin Thomas Jr., were arrested in connection with the murder of Tarpinian-Jachym. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro revealed this information during a press conference, stating that both suspects have a history of violence documented in family court records.

“I think Eric felt safe. It was early at night. He was in a decent area when this happened. It’s a shame that he became yet another victim,” she lamented. The heartbreaking toll of these murders is underscored by her statement that Tarpinian-Jachym is now the 85th victim of homicide in Washington, D.C., and Kelley’s death brings the number to 86.
