The New Orleans Saints have decided to make a significant change at quarterback during a difficult season.
In a recent game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which ended in a disappointing 23-3 loss, Saints head coach Kellen Moore opted to bench Spencer Rattler in favor of rookie Tyler Shough, a second-round draft pick. The decision reflects the team’s struggles this season, currently holding a record of 1-7.
Moore’s move came during the third quarter of the game when he replaced Rattler with Shough. Following the game, he communicated to Shough that he would take the reins as the starting quarterback going forward. This announcement, reported by ESPN, aligns with the team’s pressing need for a turnaround.
Addressing the decision, Moore stated, “We just needed a spark. Spencer has experienced some turnover issues in recent weeks, but he has also demonstrated moments of excellent play. We are searching for a solution.” This strategic shift aims to rejuvenate the struggling Saints offense.
This season has been particularly challenging for the Saints, who now share the worst record in the NFL with only one win. Although Rattler has showcased potential, the team’s overall offensive performance has been lackluster. Statistics reveal that the Saints currently rank 27th in total offense, averaging 295 yards per game. They are positioned 22nd in passing yards with 201.4 per game and 29th in scoring, managing just 16 points per contest. Notably, Rattler’s recent performance has been marred by six turnovers over the last two games, including four interceptions and two lost fumbles.
In eight games this season, Rattler has achieved a completion rate of 68%, throwing for 1,586 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Additionally, he has contributed on the ground, rushing for 167 yards.
Conversely, Shough’s performance in relief during the game against the Buccaneers included 17 completed passes out of 30 attempts for 128 yards, albeit with one interception. The Saints made Shough their highest-drafted quarterback since Archie Manning, who was selected second overall in 1971, when they drafted him with the 40th overall pick.
Shough arrives with a diverse background in college football, having played seven seasons across three different schools. His early career began at Oregon, followed by a transfer to Texas Tech, before finishing at Louisville. At Louisville, he recorded an impressive 62.7% completion rate, with 3,195 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.
Despite his talent, Shough’s journey has been challenged by injuries. He has only exceeded eight games in a single season once, during his final year at Louisville.
As the Saints prepare for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams, currently holding a record of 5-2, head coach Moore hopes Shough can provide the much-needed boost to lead the team toward its second victory of the season. The game is scheduled for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
The shift in quarterback marks a crucial moment for the Saints as they attempt to salvage their season and rejuvenate a fan base yearning for competitive football. With Shough stepping into an essential role, all eyes will be on the rookie as he takes the field against a formidable opponent.
