Alysa Liu Chronicles Unique Challenges Amid Chinese Spying Threats and Olympic Glory

Alysa Liu, a talented figure skating champion, shared her remarkable yet unsettling experience of being targeted by a Chinese spying operation when she was just 16 years old. The encounter unfolded at a Japanese restaurant, where she met with an FBI agent to learn about the surveillance her family was subjected to by the Chinese government.

The events took place in early 2022, just before Liu was set to compete in figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. It was a significant moment, as it marked her first visit to her father’s homeland, which he fled decades ago as a refugee. The Liu family became a target for espionage due to her father’s involvement in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, a pivotal moment in China’s fight for political reform.

Alysa described the experience as both eerie and exhilarating. With a hint of disbelief, she remarked, “You know what I mean? It’s so unbelievable. You know what I mean? Like, that’s crazy.” This perspective showcased her struggle to comprehend the gravity of the situation at such a young age.

During a recent roundtable interview at the USOPC Media Summit, Alysa expressed her thoughts on the bizarre circumstances she found herself in. “Imagine finding out at such a young age, I was like, ‘Am I in some prank show?’ Is this world real? It felt like I was in a movie. But it made sense, given my dad’s past as an activist,” she noted.

Recounting her discussions with the FBI agent, Liu recalled their meetings over dinner. “I was mostly there to listen and ask questions. Meeting with an FBI agent felt surreal. I was genuinely interested in her work and had many questions,” Alysa said.

Throughout the ordeal, Alysa maintained a sense of security thanks to the FBI’s involvement. She emphasized that the agency provided her with an added layer of protection.

In a troubling development, one of the five men charged with spying on Chinese dissidents in the United States, Matthew Ziburis, reached out to Liu’s father in November 2021. He impersonated a USOPC official, requesting passport numbers for both Arthur and Alysa. Reports also indicated that Ziburis traveled to the Bay Area, where the Liu family resides, to surveil them and attempt to extract sensitive information for the Chinese government.

Arthur Liu voiced his concerns to The Associated Press, stating, “They are probably just trying to intimidate us. Their intention seems to be to silence any political dissent or commentary on human rights violations in China. My worries about Alysa’s safety were significant, but the U.S. government took effective measures to protect her.”

Despite the turbulent environment, Alysa went on to compete in the Beijing Winter Games, bolstered by increased security measures from the State Department and the USOPC. She was accompanied by at least two security personnel at all times, providing her with the reassurance she needed.

Her performance at the Olympics saw her finish sixth in the women’s singles competition while also contributing to a bronze medal for the U.S. team.

Shortly after the Beijing Games, Alysa announced her retirement but astounded fans with her unexpected return to the sport. In early 2024, she made headlines by dethroning three-time defending champion Kaori Sakamoto of Japan at the World Figure Skating Championships. This victory marked a historical achievement, as Liu became the first American woman to win the title since Kimmie Meissner’s triumph in 2006.

Now, as she sets her sights on the Milano-Cortina Olympics in February, Alysa stands as one of Team USA’s most compelling narratives. The echoes of her harrowing experience with international espionage add a unique dimension to her story.

Alysa hinted at the possibility of her life experiences being transformed into a film. Yet, she expresses specific preferences for how her story should be portrayed on screen. “They have to make me look like a superhero or something. I can’t just be the kid who got spied on and did nothing about it. The main focus should really be my dad’s story because his journey is so fascinating and integral to everything that happened,” she stated.

In summation, Alysa Liu’s journey is marked by extraordinary talent, resilience, and an unexpected encounter with global politics. As she prepares for the next chapter in her athletic career, it is clear that her experiences extend far beyond the ice rink, highlighting the intersection of sports, activism, and personal growth.
