A Democratic congressional candidate from Illinois has been indicted on federal charges related to an anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protest that escalated into violence last month. The incident occurred outside an ICE facility in Broadview, a suburb of Chicago.
Katherine “Kat” Abughazaleh, 26, has referred to herself as a “Gen Z influencer” while campaigning for Congress in the state’s 9th District. She stands accused of conspiracy to impede or injure an ICE officer in the line of duty on September 26, according to an indictment unsealed this week.
Abughazaleh was seen as a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, aiming to replace longtime Representative Jan Schakowsky, who recently announced her retirement.

Among the defendants are Andre Martin, identified in the indictment as an associate of Abughazaleh, and Michael Rabbit, a Democratic committeeperson in Chicago’s 45th Ward. Additional defendants include Catherine Sharp, who is running for the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Brian Straw, and Joselyn Walsh, all local Illinois residents.
