FIRST ON FOX: The battle for Senator John Cornyn’s seat in Texas intensifies as newly announced candidate, Representative Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, speaks out. In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Hunt declared that the Republican Party has abandoned Cornyn.
Hunt entered the race earlier this month and has made headlines for his candid criticism of Cornyn’s alleged anti-Donald Trump voting record. He cited numerous posts from Trump on Truth Social in 2023 to bolster his claims.
“John Cornyn has spent 35 million dollars over the past few months yet finds himself in third place, polling in the low thirties,” Hunt stated. “With 20 percent of the electorate undecided, there is clearly room for us to grow.”
Hunt’s commitment to providing true conservative options for Texans contrasts sharply with Cornyn’s established political image. He believes his primary race will be a showdown between him and current State Attorney General Ken Paxton, indicating that Cornyn’s political days may be numbered.
Cornyn’s team responded vehemently to Hunt’s accusations. In an official statement to Fox News Digital, the senator described Hunt as a “show horse.”
“Senator Cornyn has voted with President Trump 99.3% of the time during his presidency,” stated Cornyn campaign senior advisor Matt Mackowiak. “Is Wesley Hunt suggesting that President Trump is a liberal? Keep in mind that Hunt voted for Hillary Clinton in 2008 and did not support Trump in the 2016 election.”
Mackowiak further criticized Hunt, claiming he missed 27 percent of all House votes this year when President Trump faced critical challenges. “While show horses like Wesley Hunt make speeches, Sen. Cornyn prioritizes effectively representing Texas, enabling conservative wins, and promoting Trump’s agenda.”
In response, Hunt doubled down on his allegations against Cornyn’s voting history. He accused the senator of failing to fully support Trump and labeled Cornyn’s claim of voting with Trump 99 percent of the time as a blatant untruth.
“He has not stood with the president while running ads, and claiming a 99 percent alignment is simply false,” Hunt asserted. “Moreover, his Liberty score—54 percent—reveals much about his conservatism.”
Hunt’s position may resonate well with voters. He emphasized Cornyn’s increasingly liberal voting record within the Republican Party. “He has often sided with the establishment and the Republicans in Name Only, which many Texas voters recognize. Our primary electorate is well-informed,” he added.
In further statements, Hunt referenced Truth Social posts from former President Trump, who criticized Cornyn for supposedly aligning with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in compromising with Democrats over significant legislative issues.
Trump specifically condemned Cornyn’s actions concerning gun control. He remarked that Cornyn would “go down in history as the first step in the movement to TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY.”
Hunt has the potential to make history in this race. If successful, he would become the first Black statewide elected official in Texas. However, he downplayed the significance of this milestone when discussing his campaign.
“Being the first Black statewide elected official is not my priority,” he told Fox News Digital. “What matters to me is that I am an American. Voters will choose me based on my conservative beliefs and my vision for Texas, not the color of my skin. They will evaluate me through the lens of my character.”
Efforts to contact Paxton for comments regarding the primary race were unsuccessful. The dynamics of the race continue to evolve, with both Hunt and Cornyn appealing to voters with starkly different narratives about conservatism and party loyalty. As the primary date approaches, it remains to be seen how these allegations and endorsements will shape the landscape of the Texas Senate race.
