Co-host of CBS Mornings, Gayle King, recently spoke out regarding speculation of her exit from the popular morning program amidst significant changes at Paramount. This network overhaul has prompted many to wonder about the future of its well-known staff.
King, while leaving the studio, asserted, “All I can say is this, from what I’m being told inside this building… all I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here, they like the job I’m doing, I like the job I’m doing.” This statement was made in an interview with TMZ as she was leaving, indicating her commitment to the show.
Continuing her remarks, King emphasized her enjoyment of her role and colleagues, saying, “What I’m hearing in the building is not what I’m reading in the press. And what I’m not going to do is negotiate it in the media. Not doing that!” This response reflects her desire to keep discussions regarding her future within the organization, rather than making statements for public consumption.
In a follow-up to her comments, King noted that she is uncertain if CBS Mornings will take a new direction when her contract expires in May 2026. “All I know is I am here — I am here and glad to be here,” she mentioned as she entered her vehicle.
As of now, CBS News has not responded to requests for comments regarding King’s statements, and a spokesperson for Paramount declined to issue a statement on the matter.
On October 31, reports from Variety surfaced, citing multiple sources familiar with the network’s plans, which suggested that King is poised to step down as co-host of CBS Mornings following more than ten years with the program. Although her contract is set to expire in May, the report indicates that King may continue with CBS News in a different capacity, potentially following a format similar to that of Norah O’Donnell, who transitioned out as anchor of CBS Evening News earlier this year.
A spokesperson for CBS News communicated, “There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.” This encases a commitment to King’s presence within the network even if she moves away from her current role.
King joined CBS News back in 2012, playing an integral part in the relaunch of what was initially known as CBS This Morning. Despite numerous shifts among co-hosts throughout the years, King has maintained her position. However, she has faced challenges in boosting the show’s ratings, even with a strong roster of celebrity connections, including Oprah Winfrey. Reports suggest her annual earnings range from $10 million to $15 million.
Speculation concerning King’s future at CBS Mornings heightened after John Dickerson, another prominent CBS anchor, announced his departure from CBS Evening News, creating further uncertainty within the network. Both shows have struggled to secure their footing in the competitive morning and evening news arena, often trailing behind ABC and NBC.
