Washington’s Inaction Hurts Millions of Americans in Need

Financial support that many Americans depend on for health and nutrition currently hangs in the balance. As the clock ticked toward November 1, 2025, a pivotal date loomed over the lives of millions. This day may be remembered as one of the most devastating in recent American history.

At this moment, Congress and the administration have ceased to provide vital financial assistance that hardworking Americans rely on for health coverage and food. The consequences of this decision threaten to inflict unimaginable suffering across the nation. While the government shutdown drags on with no resolution in sight, Washington appears to be in disarray.

The leaders responsible for the welfare of the American people seem to be disengaged. This neglect is unacceptable. Great nations ensure that their citizens do not suffer from illness or hunger.

As a pediatrician with three decades of experience in community health clinics nationwide, I have witnessed firsthand the shortcomings of our health care system. Far too many individuals lack any form of insurance. Even among those who are insured, exorbitant costs prompt many to delay or skip necessary medical care. No matter how diligently my patients’ families worked, many couldn’t afford essential care or basic groceries like eggs, milk, and bread.

Leaders in Washington should be committed to improving these systems. Instead, they are exacerbating the problem.

The Impact of Health Coverage Loss

Over 24 million Americans rely on health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. This includes farmers, ranchers, small-business owners, people with disabilities, and self-employed individuals who all depend on these plans for their well-being.

Historically, the federal government has provided tax credits to significantly reduce health care costs. These credits have saved individuals an average of $800 per year. For working families, that amount can cover rent or provide essential food items. Consequently, more Americans than ever before have gained insurance coverage, and an overwhelming majority of citizens support its continuation.

However, Congress has removed these crucial tax credits, even as insurance premiums continue to rise. Families caught in this turmoil now find their health care unaffordable. Unfortunately, no assistance appears forthcoming.

The Crisis Facing Food Support Programs

As health care costs soar, leaders in Washington are also permitting communities to face food insecurity. Currently, over 40 million Americans depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP. This program predominantly serves children, seniors, veterans, and people living with disabilities. Few programs rival SNAP’s effectiveness in reducing poverty and enhancing health.

Alarmingly, this is the first time in SNAP’s history that the federal government has not distributed benefits. When participants check their account balances, they may find zero dollars available. The administration possesses a $5 billion emergency fund for SNAP, yet is choosing not to deploy these resources. As a result, hunger is likely to surge, and food banks will face overwhelming new pressures. Many families will find themselves grappling with how to feed their members.

The Disconnect in Leadership

It is essential to clarify what is unfolding. The president is a billionaire, and members of Congress generally have a net worth twelve times greater than that of the average American. Just months after passing legislation known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which will lead to millions losing coverage, they are now further stripping health care and food support from countless individuals. Such actions represent a severe lapse in empathy and responsibility.

Real Lives Affected by Policy Decisions

In my experience as a pediatrician, I have seen children living in motels because their parents could not afford permanent housing, even while working multiple jobs. Many go hungry due to a lack of food. Now, this suffering will intensify across the nation. People like Erin Jackson-Hill, a resident of Alaska working multiple jobs, find themselves unable to afford health coverage without the tax credits. Similarly, Casey McBlain, a single mother in Maine, will be forced to delay essential bill payments to feed her children.

Hardworking Americans who abide by the rules deserve better than this. A vast majority of Americans are united in their belief that access to health care should not depend on geographic location or income level. Yet, the decisions made by the administration and Congress have stripped away vital health care and food support.

A Call for Action

Addressing the issues of health care affordability and food insecurity should transcend political divides. The solutions are straightforward. It is imperative to activate SNAP contingency reserves now to aid families desperately in need of food assistance. Congress must prioritize working together to end the shutdown, fully fund essential nutrition programs, and restore the tax credits that are vital for keeping Americans healthy.

Instead, the leaders in Washington remain occupied with games that jeopardize the well-being of millions, using people’s essential needs as bargaining chips. They have turned their backs on communities that rely on their support. This is not a sign of greatness.

As both a doctor and an American, I feel a deep sense of shame. With the impending suffering awaiting millions of Americans, I know I am not alone in this sentiment.
