The National Football League made headlines on Monday by suspending Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu for one game. This suspension comes as a result of his repeated use of hip-drop tackles, which contradict league regulations established to safeguard player health and safety.
According to the NFL, Luvu committed numerous violations of its rules. His most recent hip-drop tackle occurred during the team’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. This incident marked the third occurrence of such a tackle this season.
The NFL cited Rule 12, Section 2, Article 18 (a)(b), as the basis for their decision. This particular rule highlights that a tackle is deemed a foul if a player utilizes the following technique: grabbing the runner with one or both hands or wrapping the runner with both arms, and subsequently unweighting themselves by swiveling and dropping their hips and/or lower body, which results in landing on or trapping the runner’s legs at or below the knee.
Luvu retains the option to appeal his suspension based on the collective bargaining agreement in place. This is not the first time the linebacker has faced disciplinary action; he had already received suspensions for his previous two hip-drop tackles earlier in the season.
As it stands, Luvu is set to miss the Commanders’ upcoming Week 10 game against the Detroit Lions. His absence could significantly impact the team’s defense, which has already faced challenges this season.
In the 2024 season, Luvu has proven himself to be a dependable player. He participated in all 17 games last season and showcased impressive stats with 99 tackles, eight sacks, seven pass breakups, and one interception. This season, he has continued to display strength on the field, recording 50 tackles, two sacks, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble over nine games.
The Commanders have struggled with injuries throughout the season. Most notably, quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained a serious arm injury during the same game that Luvu received his suspension. This injury is expected to sideline Daniels for several weeks, further compounding the team’s woes.
As of now, the Commanders hold a record of 3 wins and 6 losses this season. This record puts them in a challenging position as they look to improve as the season progresses.
The NFL’s decision to suspend Frankie Luvu reinforces the league’s commitment to upholding player safety and protecting athletes from potentially harmful playing techniques. As teams navigate the remainder of the season, the repercussions of such suspensions will resonate, reminding players of the importance of compliance with established rules.
This suspension serves as a pivotal moment for Luvu and the Washington Commanders. It will be essential for the team to adapt quickly as they strive to overcome these challenges while keeping an eye on the league’s health and safety standards.
