MONTCLAIR, N.J. – As New Jersey voters prepare to head to the polls, both major party candidates are expressing optimism about their chances in a highly competitive gubernatorial race.
Democratic nominee Rep. Mikie Sherrill, speaking to reporters after casting her ballot at a local school, reflected on the strong early voting turnout. She stated, “We’ve seen substantial rallies and excellent vote-by-mail numbers. I am confident about how today will turn out.”
On the other side, Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, making his third consecutive attempt at the governorship, echoed Sherrill’s sentiments. He has his sights set on victory after narrowly losing to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy four years ago.
“If we can replicate or improve upon our Election Day performance from 2021, we will celebrate a victory,” Ciattarelli announced during an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” late Monday.
High Stakes in the Garden State
The gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia are unique, as these two states hold elections for governor in the year following a presidential election. Conversely, Sherrill has strategically attempted to distance herself from Trump’s influence, criticizing Ciattarelli for aligning closely with the former president. She has consistently referred to him as giving Trump an ‘A’ for his policies.
Despite being in a state where registered Democrats significantly outnumber Republicans, Ciattarelli has appeared to close the gap with Sherrill recently. Both candidates have touted impressive early in-person and mail-in voting statistics ahead of Election Day.
“We’ve successfully established our voter turnout goals, overcoming the anticipated ‘blue firewall’ today,” Sherrill declared on Tuesday, reinforcing her commitment to mobilizing every voter.
Controversies and Challenges
This election cycle has not been free from complications. A noteworthy incident occurred when the National Personnel Records Center mistakenly released Sherrill’s sensitive military records to an ally of Ciattarelli’s campaign. The improperly redacted files included personal information, raising significant privacy concerns.
Although Sherrill’s military background has been called into question, she defended her integrity, noting that she was never implicated in a cheating scandal that affected her 1994 graduation from the United States Naval Academy. Following her service in the Navy, she has maintained a strong public profile, advocating for various issues that resonate with New Jersey voters.

The New Jersey gubernatorial race has historical elements that complicate predictions.
