As Hezbollah continues to strengthen its military capabilities and Lebanon faces criticism for not enforcing a ceasefire agreement, Israel’s defense minister has issued a stark warning to the Lebanese government.
On Sunday, Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Hezbollah is engaging in dangerous behavior. He noted that the Lebanese president is not fulfilling the commitment to dismantle Hezbollah’s arsenal, which poses a significant threat to northern Israel. Katz asserted that Israel will intensify measures to ensure a safe environment for its citizens.
This alert arises as the Israel Defense Forces are considering expanded operations against Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, following numerous breaches of the ceasefire.
A senior IDF officer stationed on the northern border disclosed in an exclusive interview that Hezbollah remains heavily armed and supported by Iran. The officer explained that the group has not relinquished its weaponry and continues to train and receive financial backing, thereby maintaining its operational presence in the region.
The IDF recently reported the elimination of two Hezbollah commanders in southern Lebanon. This includes Muhammad Ali Hadid, a high-ranking member of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. His death occurred in Nabatieh, while another operative was targeted after being observed gathering intelligence on Israeli positions.
A statement from the IDF clarified that this action was necessary due to Hezbollah’s violation of understandings with Israel. The IDF remains committed to neutralizing any threats to the State of Israel.
The senior officer explained that these proactive operations reflect a shift in Israel’s security strategy. He indicated that the decision is to address threats immediately rather than waiting passively. The IDF has already succeeded in pushing Hezbollah back, enabling civilians to return to their homes. The focus now is on safeguarding those advancements and preventing Hezbollah’s resurgence.
This approach stems from lessons learned following the October 7 incident, which prompted a reevaluation of defense strategies. The officer noted the previous tendency to overlook certain threats must end.
Furthermore, the IDF’s 91st Division has conducted its largest military exercise since the onset of hostilities, enhancing readiness for both defensive and offensive operations along the Lebanese border. This drill encompassed land, air, and maritime simulations.
The officer elaborated that the exercises aimed to evaluate defensive systems, coordination, and quick-response capabilities, applying insights gained from recent conflicts to ensure that responses are prompt and effective in future encounters.
Reports from Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, indicate that Hezbollah is rapidly replenishing its weaponry with assistance from Iran. Despite obstacles to their supply lines due to the disruption caused by Syria’s civil war, analysts believe Hezbollah is successfully restoring its arsenal.
Frustration from the Trump administration over Lebanon’s failure to act against Hezbollah has also surfaced. U.S. Special Envoy Thomas Barrack described Lebanon as a failed state, citing the paralysis of its government and the extensive financial resources he stated Hezbollah invests in its fighters compared to the national military.
In light of recent military actions by Israel, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi urged his German counterpart to advocate for pressure to be applied on Israel to cease its military operations in the region. Raggi emphasized that diplomatic solutions, rather than military actions, are essential for achieving stability in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese government claims that it is making progress towards unifying all weapons under state control, which remains a contentious issue. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed serious concerns regarding the conflict and urged all parties to recommit to halting hostilities.
UNIFIL reiterated that collaborating with the Lebanese Armed Forces is crucial and that restoring state authority aligns with the core objectives of UN Resolution 1701.
