Despite the arduous efforts made by the rescuers, the man, identified as Octav Stroici, succumbed to his injuries shortly after he was retrieved from the rubble, according to a report by The Associated Press.

The rescue operation kicked off when emergency personnel began their attempts to reach the trapped worker through a first-floor window. However, this effort was soon halted due to a dangerous cloud of debris and concerns that the already unstable structure might collapse further.

Challenges Faced by Rescuers

Rescue teams faced significant challenges throughout the operation. They initially deployed two ladders with the aim of sending a drone up to assist, but this attempt also failed.

A crane, accompanied by rescue workers, was brought in with large tubes designed to help remove rubble from the second-floor window. The situation required delicate maneuvering to prevent further complications during the extraction.

Lamberto Giannini, the prefect of Rome, noted that the complexity of the situation prolonged the operation, stating, “The operation lasted a long time because every time a part of the body was freed, there was additional rubble that covered it.”

Roberto Gualtieri, the Mayor of Rome, emphasized the caution demonstrated by workers during the renovation process to avoid any additional collapses. Fortunately, three other workers managed to escape injury during the incident, but one was hospitalized in critical condition. Remarkably, no firefighters sustained injuries during the lengthy rescue attempt.

The Torre dei Conti, which dates back to the 13th century, holds historical significance as it was once the residence of Pope Innocent III and his family. It has been closed to the public since 2007 for renovation.
