Food Network Chef Tobias Dorzon Triumphs After Surviving Eleven Gunshot Wounds in Robbery

Food Network star Tobias Dorzon has shared a harrowing account of the night he was shot eleven times during a devastating armed robbery. His story is one of resilience and survival.

In an intimate interview with People magazine, Dorzon, known for his appearances on Guy Fieri’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” and “Tournament of Champions,” recounted the brutal incident that unfolded on November 5, 2024. A group of armed robbers targeted him and his girlfriend, Crystal Swan, shortly after they returned home from a night out in Maryland.

“I was trying to cover Crystal, and then I started getting hit,” Dorzon explained. He remembered collapsing to the ground and struggling to crawl toward safety while feeling the chaos around him. “I couldn’t hear my girl,” he added, highlighting the panic of that moment.

The Moment of Attack

According to Dorzon, he and Swan had just exited their Uber when they noticed individuals approaching them with guns drawn. In a critical miscalculation, he had chosen not to bring his security detail that evening, which he now reflects on regretfully.

“You have that last second of wondering if you will still be here. People walking toward you, guns in hand, what are their intentions? Are they here to kill you or just rob you? The uncertainty consumes you. I just hoped my children were safe,” he said.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, Dorzon feared he would not survive the encounter. “At that point, I thought they would finish me off. I could see my hands covered in blood,” he recalled, a vivid reminder of the trauma he endured.

A Web of Violence and Theft

Dorzon was shot eleven times, while his girlfriend Swan also sustained injuries and collapsed in their front yard. In a desperate move for help, Dorzon managed to FaceTime his brother, propping up his phone on the curb despite the severity of his injuries. A neighbor promptly called 911 as the chaos escalated.

Investigative documents obtained by various news outlets revealed that the robbers made off with valuable items, including Dorzon’s Audemars Piguet watch and a diamond necklace. The total worth of stolen goods is estimated to be around $100,000.

Five suspects left the scene in a stolen vehicle. One of them, identified as 21-year-old Devin Demetrius Spivey, faces a slew of charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery. Spivey has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Spivey’s attorney, Brendan Callahan, discussing the ongoing investigation, stated, “There are numerous other suspects still at large. Many questions remain unanswered. We are confident that further investigation will reveal that Devin Spivey did not shoot Mr. Dorzon.”

Facing the Aftermath

Dorzon, who endured this traumatic experience alongside his girlfriend, faced the sobering realization that he might never walk again, due to the severe injuries below his knee. Reflecting on the incident, he expressed deep emotions, saying, “I didn’t know how to process what had happened. For someone who has never been in trouble, I never thought that returning home to become a local hero would lead to such a traumatic experience.”

Each day brings a battle for Dorzon. He continuously questions his decisions that night, asking himself if he should have stayed in or if going out was a mistake. Yet, he remains hopeful, telling himself, “God has a bigger purpose for me.”

A Long Road to Recovery

After spending two months in the hospital and undergoing multiple surgeries and physical therapy sessions, Dorzon shared his journey on social media. He received immense support from friends, family, and fellow chef Guy Fieri.

“Even after the shooting, Guy was constantly checking in on me, ensuring I was well taken care of and offering encouragement. His support has been invaluable during my recovery process,” Dorzon stated, acknowledging the loyalty of his friend in such a trying time.

Returning to the Spotlight

As he adjusts to life after the shooting, Dorzon prepares to return to television with the premiere of Food Network’s “Tournament of Champions: All-Star Christmas.” Although he faced physical challenges, including losing feeling in one finger, he remains determined to pursue his passion for cooking.

“I’m incredibly grateful to be alive, to be in this moment, and still able to create memorable food experiences for others,” he emphasized. “That has always been my dream.”

Embracing the Future with Grace

Dorzon’s resilience serves as an inspiration. His ability to face such adversity seeks to remind others of the fragility of life and the power of perseverance. As he continues on his path to recovery, he stands ready to reclaim his position in the culinary world, determined to make delicious meals and lasting memories.
