An experienced hunter who went missing in the California wilderness for twenty days has been located alive in a rescue that many are calling a miracle. Selma resident Ron Dailey, aged 65, was found along the Swamp Lake Trail within the Sierra National Forest, according to statements from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Dailey had not returned from a hunting expedition near Shaver Lake on October 13, prompting authorities to launch an extensive search and rescue operation. His well-being had been a concern given his pre-existing medical conditions.
During his harrowing experience, Dailey spent six days without food, which took a toll on his physical condition. His wife, Glenda, confirmed that he has received medical treatment since being found.
Glenda shared a touching update on social media about her husband’s recovery. “The hospital staff are pumping him with fluids, and his color is coming back,” she stated. “He’s going to be shocked when I show him all the people who helped look for him,” she added, highlighting the support her family received during the ordeal.
The Fresno County Search and Rescue Posse expressed their relief and gratitude at Dailey’s recovery, calling it an absolute miracle. Their tireless efforts navigating the challenging terrain proved crucial in locating him.
“Ron’s safe return is nothing short of a miracle,” the agency stated, emphasizing the importance of community spirit. They noted that such experiences remind us all of the value of life, unity, and the importance of serving others during their darkest moments.
Dailey’s adventure began on October 13 when he left home, heading toward the remote areas of Shaver Lake and Courtright Reservoir in Fresno County. Known for traversing small roads and dirt paths, he seemed well-prepared for his hunting trip.
A recording shared by his family revealed Dailey’s account of the trip. He described successfully navigating his 2002 silver Dodge Dakota up the Swamp Lake Trail, where he stopped briefly to snack. However, his journey took a turn when he ventured down a less traveled ‘jeep road’ and found himself trapped.
“I don’t know why, but I did,” Dailey admitted, reflecting on the decision that led to his truck becoming stuck in rough terrain.
Despite indications of a trail, Dailey found the rugged environment challenging. His vehicle sustained damage, forcing him to remain stranded on a rocky plateau for several days.
As the days passed, he reached a relatively flat section on the trail. He attempted to create a makeshift shelter by jacking up his truck and removing the passenger seat, but the setup was immensely uncomfortable.
After contemplating his situation for several days, Dailey recognized that he had to abandon his vehicle and continue on foot. He described the trek through harsh conditions, at an altitude exceeding 10,000 feet, as the “toughest walk I’ve ever done in my life,” noting that he had to pause every hundred yards to catch his breath.
During his difficult journey, Dailey endured multiple falls and ultimately lost his cellphone. At a particularly desperate moment, he took time to pray, asking for help.
“You gotta send somebody up here to me. I can hardly walk anymore,” he recalled, visibly emotional in the recording.
In a stroke of luck, Dailey later spotted the headlights of a car. Elation filled him as he raised his hands in the air. The group of hunters who found him quickly recognized him, leading to an emotional reunion filled with gratitude.
They provided him with much-needed food and water after he revealed that it had been six long days since his last meal.
Glenda expressed immense gratitude to those who played a role in her husband’s rescue. “To the men who went down that road and found him, I am eternally grateful for you; I cannot wait to see you,” she shared, also acknowledging the countless volunteers who tirelessly searched for Dailey.
“There are so many family members, friends, and acquaintances involved in looking for him, and we appreciate every single one!” she said, emphasizing the importance of community action. “God still does miracles, and we have just been shown one,” Glenda added.
Officials stated that Dailey’s miraculous recovery serves as a powerful reminder of the inherent value of every life and the strength that comes from unity during unfortunate times. They reaffirmed the importance of community involvement in assisting those in peril.
This extraordinary story of survival highlights the resilience of the human spirit, showcasing the lengths to which individuals will go for one another in times of need. Ron Dailey’s experience stands as a testament to hope, perseverance, and community support in overcoming life’s most daunting challenges.
