David Hogg Urges Democrats to Restore Faith in the American Dream Following Zohran Mamdani’s Victory
As Zohran Mamdani celebrated his remarkable victory in New York City, former Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg spoke to Fox News Digital about the urgent need for Democrats to restore voters’ confidence in the American Dream.
Despite enduring losses across various races in the 2024 election cycle, Democrats achieved notable victories in key contests during this off-year election cycle. These successes included a surprising socialist wave in New York City, fruitful Democratic-led redistricting efforts in California, and gubernatorial triumphs in New Jersey and Virginia.
“No city compares to New York City,” Hogg stated Tuesday night. “Virginia and New Jersey are unique in their own rights. The crucial lesson from tonight is not to replicate every policy from New York across the nation. Instead, it’s imperative to listen to voters and clearly articulate actions aimed at lowering costs.”
Hogg, who ignited a rift within the Democratic Party earlier this year by pledging a substantial investment to challenge incumbent Democrats in blue congressional districts, joined in the celebration of Mamdani’s triumph in New York City’s fiercely contested mayoral race.

Hogg emphasized the importance of a strong message and genuine engagement with voters. “When candidates express a true desire to serve and take tangible actions, it resonates with the electorate,” he remarked during his conversation.
The mayoral election season in New York City has illuminated underlying ideological and generational conflicts within the Democratic Party. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned amid a series of controversies in 2021 including multiple allegations of sexual harassment he has denied, had hoped to reestablish his political presence this year. However, Mamdani’s unexpected victory in the Democratic primary in June disrupted those plans.
A self-identified democratic socialist, Mamdani is set to become New York City’s youngest mayor in over a century. His campaign highlighted key issues such as affordability, promising initiatives like equitable bus services, free childcare, rent control, and city-operated grocery stores.
Cuomo, reflecting on the current landscape of the Democratic Party, stated, “A civil war is quietly unfolding. On one side, you have an extreme left represented by figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. On the other, mainstream moderate Democrats. Mamdani is simply a figurehead for this leftist movement.”
In his chat with Fox News Digital, Hogg, a supporter of Mamdani’s campaign from the onset, argued that Mamdani’s victory signifies more than a straightforward endorsement of socialism. He emphasized that this win is illustrative of effective campaign strategies.
“The takeaway here revolves around tactics rather than strict policy,” Hogg explained. “It’s about truly listening and effectively communicating how to address the primary concerns of voters. This can manifest differently from a candidate like Mamdani in New York City to a more moderate figure in Virginia, like Abigail Spanberger. This diversity within the party should be embraced.”
As the midterm elections approach, Hogg stressed that Democrats need to effectively convey their commitment to the working class. He advised the party to focus on policies that directly impact the economy and enhance the quality of life for voters.
“This election is fundamentally about making the American Dream attainable once more,” Hogg declared.
This year, Hogg faced removal from his position as DNC vice chair as a result of a procedural challenge. This development came on the heels of his announcement regarding his political action committee, Leaders We Deserve, which intends to invest $20 million in primary challenges against incumbent Democrats Hogg believes are neglecting their duties.
“While this vote’s implications stem from the DNC’s election procedures, the broader implications of my reform efforts within the party cannot be overlooked,” Hogg noted in May.
Mamdani’s victory attracted hundreds of supporters celebrating at the Paramount theater in Brooklyn on Tuesday night. This group included notable figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, former Representative Jamaal Bowman, NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Attorney General Letitia James, actress Cynthia Nixon, activist Mahmoud Khalil, and Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza.
Mamdani will soon become the first millennial mayor of the United States’ largest city. His campaign leveraged social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to connect with younger voters and boost participation among historically low-propensity demographics.
Like Donald Trump in 2024, Mamdani emphasized affordability as the cornerstone of his campaign, pledging to create a New York City that residents can realistically afford.
