A Mother’s Heartbreak: Remembering Itay Chen and the Ongoing Fight for Hostages

After 759 days filled with anguish and uncertainty, my son Itay has finally returned to us from captivity in Gaza. Since his abduction on October 7, 2023, my family and I have held on to the hope of his safe return. Bringing him home has been our greatest longing.

We had envisioned a different outcome, one where Itay would walk through the door alive, where we could hear his laughter and feel his warm embrace again. Unfortunately, that is not the reality we are facing.

We stand on the brink of funeral arrangements, preparing to lay Itay to rest. Our hearts will shatter anew when his body is finally buried. This sorrow reaches deeper than the day he was taken from us, a day when he, along with his tank crew, displayed extraordinary bravery, risking their lives to save others. Matan, the only survivor of his crew, fortunately returned home after over two years in captivity, reunited with his family. We had hoped for a similar miracle for Itay, yet the cruel hand of fate had different plans.

Having Itay back for burial in Israel is painfully bittersweet, yet it brings a semblance of closure we desperately need. Throughout the time Itay remained a hostage in Gaza, we were unable to grieve, unable to process our loss or begin to heal.

I express my profound gratitude to the U.S. administration for its unwavering commitment to securing the release of hostages. Their leadership played a crucial role, preventing us from facing an even longer wait for our loved ones to return. Without their political determination, we would have been left in the shadows of uncertainty, unable to mourn as we have now begun to do.

Despite this return, we must not lose sight of other families still in despair.

Even with Itay’s return, the pain persists for those whose loved ones remain unaccounted for. As it stands, six other families are still holding onto hope for their loved ones’ return from Gaza. We cannot yet move on; we cannot fully close this chapter. For these families, the nightmare continues. As a community, our struggle is far from over. We must continue fighting until every last hostage is safely home.

The devastation inflicted on October 7 and the subsequent toll of the ongoing conflict has affected countless individuals. Yet, from this overwhelming tragedy, we must strive to cultivate something stronger and more resilient. I pray that the ultimate sacrifice made by Itay and others will not fade from memory, and that it will catalyze a future characterized by unity and healing for the people of Israel.

A Call for Unity Amidst Struggle

This moment marks a pivotal turn for our nation. Israel cannot afford to revert to the status quo of petty politics and divisive rhetoric. Instead, we must reforge our country and rekindle our collective spirit of togetherness. We need to honor the memory of those lost by committing to end the perpetual cycle of violence with our neighbors, aiming for a brighter future for the next generation.

We stand at a crossroads. The collective grief of the Israeli people has tested our resilience. The future of our nation hinges on the leadership that emerges from this crisis. We need leaders who embody unity, who can foster healing and restoration.

As I prepare to bury my son, I choose to believe that the sacrifices of Itay and so many others will lead to a stronger Israel; a nation where we stand united amidst this profound tragedy, striving for a better country, a more peaceful region, and ensuring that no one is abandoned again.

Commitment to Resolution and Healing

The ongoing pain felt by families like mine underlines the urgency for change. The anguish over lost loved ones should spur us to action. We must resist complacency and remain determined to advocate for our missing sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters. Our voices must combine to demand justice and resolution, not just for ourselves, but for all whose lives have been altered by this conflict.

In honor of those we have lost and those who continue to suffer, we must remain steadfast in our resolve. The fight is not merely for hostages; it is for the very soul of our nation. As the community grieves, reflecting on our collective losses can create a foundation for future reconciliation and renewal.

As we navigate this uncertain path, our courage must not wane. Every effort counts, and every voice matters. Together, we can transform our pain into purpose, laying the groundwork for a future that prioritizes peace and unity. In this desperate time, let us hold fast to hope for a brighter tomorrow.
