EXCLUSIVE: In an emotional appeal, Carl and Marsha Mueller, the parents of American aid worker Kayla Mueller, have penned a heartfelt letter to President Donald Trump. They urge him to take action during his upcoming meeting with Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to facilitate the return of their daughter’s remains, nearly a decade after her tragic death at the hands of ISIS.
The heartfelt letter was shared exclusively with Fox News Digital just days before al-Sharaa is set to visit Washington. This meeting marks his first since assuming leadership following the downfall of the Assad regime. The Muellers referred to this encounter as “a providential opportunity” to bring some resolution to an agonizing chapter of the Syrian conflict.
The Muellers expressed deep sorrow in their letter, stating, “Ten long years have passed since our daughter’s body found its resting place, unmarked and unknown, somewhere in the crimson folds of Syria’s hills. Kayla’s body has not been returned home to us; her story remains incomplete.”
Kayla Mueller, a 26-year-old humanitarian worker from Arizona, was kidnapped by ISIS in 2013 while aiding Syrian refugees near the Turkish border. Tragically, she was held captive by ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who reportedly tortured and murdered her in 2015. Despite efforts, her remains have never been recovered, and her family has been left with unanswered questions and unfulfilled grief.
The Muellers’ letter recounts pivotal moments in their journey. Following the execution of Operation Kayla Mueller— ordered by Trump in 2019—al-Baghdadi was killed in northern Syria. The Muellers expressed their gratitude to the President during the 2020 Republican National Convention, where they commended him for his role in bringing justice to their daughter’s tragedy.
With the collapse of the Assad regime, the political landscape in Syria has undergone significant change. The Muellers noted an increase in regional cooperation aimed at locating missing Americans. They specifically highlighted the efforts of Congressman Abe Hamadeh from Arizona, who recently traveled to Damascus to advocate for Kayla’s return.
In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, Hamadeh emphasized the deep personal commitment he feels towards the Muellers. He remarked, “I was sworn into Congress with my hand resting on Kayla Mueller’s Bible, with my family and Kayla’s parents standing by my side. I vowed to them that I would do everything I could to bring her home.” In honoring Kayla’s memory, he further stated, “Her spirit refused to break even in her darkest hour, and this is why I refuse to give up on bringing this remarkable young woman home to her family.”
The Muellers believe that the recent changes in Syria’s leadership present a valuable chance to resolve issues surrounding missing persons, particularly Americans who have not yet returned home. They expressed hope that the shift in power could lead to the final act of closure regarding their daughter’s story.
They addressed President Trump directly in their letter, expressing their faith in his leadership. They wrote, “The Assad regime has fallen, and with new leadership brings new opportunity to write the final chapter on Americans still missing in Syria. Through your leadership, we believe the torch Kayla was forced to drop has roared back to life.”
President Trump’s upcoming dialogue with al-Sharaa stands as a crucial moment for U.S. foreign policy, according to the Muellers. They highlighted the importance of this meeting for both their family’s ten-year quest for closure and the broader implications for Americans affected by the Syrian conflict.
The letter concludes with a heartfelt appeal, stating, “Your meeting is sure to inspire real hope across Syria’s war-torn streets. Bringing Kayla’s body home will do the same for every American heart. Together, we can end the era of terror’s reign in Syria and achieve closure for Kayla’s story. This is a moment to reaffirm America’s resolve: we never abandon our own. One more push could bring Kayla home.”
