Former LSU Coach Brian Kelly Offers Support to Tigers After Departure

Brian Kelly has shared his first public comments following his dismissal as LSU’s head football coach. This announcement comes less than two weeks after the university made the decision to part ways with Kelly, who still had six seasons remaining on his ten-year contract valued at $100 million.

Despite the abrupt end to his tenure, Kelly expressed goodwill towards the Tigers. He plans to support interim head coach Frank Wilson during the upcoming game against No. 4 Alabama this Saturday.

Kelly emphasized that there is no animosity regarding his departure. In a message posted on X, he reflected on his time at the university with a mix of gratitude and disappointment.

“This journey began with great expectations and my own vision of how to get there,” Kelly remarked. “Sometimes the journey does not end the way we hope.”

Reflecting on Achievements

During his statement, Kelly highlighted the successes achieved at LSU. “When I think of our time together, I remember and appreciate what we accomplished. I had the privilege to coach exceptional student-athletes, including a Heisman Trophy winner and many who are now playing professionally. Furthermore, 39 of our players earned spots on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2024,” he noted.

He fondly recalled his family’s ties to LSU, mentioning that two of his children earned advanced degrees from the university, while another began their career there.

After the Texas A&M Defeat

Kelly’s exit from LSU followed a disappointing loss to Texas A&M, where the Tigers were defeated 49-25. Under his leadership, the team ended his stint with a record of 34 wins and 14 losses, amid a current season standing of 5 wins and 3 losses overall, and a troubling 2-3 record in SEC play.

“The losses will always hurt, but I will cherish all of the wins,” he continued. “Saturday nights in Tiger Stadium are undeniably special. I am proud to have worn the purple and gold and to have been part of that atmosphere.”

Upcoming Challenges for the Tigers

Though the Tigers have four regular-season games left, their chances of making the College Football Playoff appear slim, especially after a disappointing season under Kelly’s leadership. As the team looks to the future, Kelly extended his best wishes to the players and coaching staff.

“As everyone heads out to watch the Tigers play, I wish Coach Wilson, the coaches, and our players all the best this weekend. I know they will put in their best efforts for themselves and for LSU. We will be watching and cheering for you,” he added.

Financial Implications of Kelly’s Dismissal

Following his departure, Kelly faces a buyout clause estimated at approximately $50 million from LSU, barring a settlement. This figure would rank as the second-highest in college football history, second only to Jimbo Fisher’s buyout from Texas A&M.

Looking Ahead: Future Coach Considerations

As for who might replace Kelly in the coming seasons, that decision rests with athletic director Scott Woodward. His departure had become a topic of discussion after public comments made by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a significant stakeholder for LSU.

Current interim athletic director Verge Ausberry has denied rumors surrounding a potential reunion with former LSU coach Nick Saban. However, speculations about Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin potentially stepping into the role have gained traction among fans and analysts alike.

What Lies Ahead for LSU Football

The current situation at LSU represents a significant moment for the football program. The next head coach will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the team and restoring its competitive edge in the SEC.

As the Tigers move forward from this transition, fans and stakeholders remain hopeful that the program can recover and thrive once more.
