JB Smoove Shares Insights on Life, Loss, and Laughter While Embracing New Beginnings

From his early days working at a perfume shop during high school to becoming a fan-favorite on HBO’s acclaimed series Curb Your Enthusiasm, comedian JB Smoove’s guiding principle of ‘never disappoint’ has fueled his relentless drive for advancement.

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, the comedy icon candidly reflected on the pivotal moments that have shaped his life and career, revealing his future ambitions.

A Journey Marked by Resilience

Though Smoove may appear to have effortlessly climbed the ladder of success, his journey has been rife with challenges that have instilled in him a sense of resilience and an unwavering commitment to his motto.

Growing up in a housing project in Mount Vernon, New York, Smoove faced significant obstacles, including the loss of his father at the tender age of 15. This formative experience, alongside others, profoundly influenced his outlook on life and personal development.

The Importance of Consumption

Smoove emphasizes the value of the experiences that shape an individual. He explains, ‘I always say, you are what you eat. People often associate this with food, but it extends beyond that. It encompasses what you absorb through sound, sight, and even the company you keep.’ Smoove believes that our experiences, friendships, and losses collectively shape our perspectives on life.

A Memorable First Job

One of the significant milestones in Smoove’s life was his first job at a local perfume shop during his high school years. In this setting, he discovered a passion for creativity and artistry. He fondly recalls how the shop owner mentored him, inspiring a profound respect that has stayed with him throughout his career.

Smoove describes his fascination with crafting scents, noting, ‘I started loving the process of the ingredients. They had these little scent sticks — you would stick it in there and crack it — and eventually, I honed my sense of smell to the point where I could identify each component even with multiple ingredients involved.’

In reflecting on this experience, he realizes that the shop owner instilled in him the ability to foster originality and creativity.

Education and the Spark of Comedy

This initial spark of creativity propelled Smoove through college, where he pursued graphic design before uncovering a newfound passion: comedy.

‘The first step I took into the world of comedy was enrolling in an improv class at the historic Improv comedy club on 44th Street and 9th Avenue in New York City,’ Smoove shared.

His admiration for sketch comedy from shows like Saturday Night Live and Benny Hill shaped his comedic voice. He stated, ‘All of these influences contribute to the person I am today.’

Finding His On-Stage Identity

As he navigated through his comedic aspirations, Smoove sought to uncover his unique on-stage persona. ‘I wanted to identify who I would be on that stage. How could I channel my natural humor to bring joy to others? Taking that improv class provided me with invaluable tools just as the club was closing its doors,’ he recounted.

Pivotal Breakthroughs

Smoove’s journey reached a significant milestone when he became a writer for Def Comedy Jam, subsequently applying his improv skills as a performer on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in 2003. This role positioned him in a prominent spotlight.

However, his career-defining moment arrived when he was cast as Leon Black in Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, which Smoove calls ‘the greatest improvised show in TV history.’ Reflecting on this opportunity, he noted, ‘As a longtime fan of the series, it was surreal to be on the show. My wife had even predicted it, saying I would one day share the screen with Larry.’

Smoove acknowledges the importance of timing in his journey, stating, ‘I never burned bridges or stepped on any toes. Sometimes, you receive opportunities precisely when you are ready for them.’

A New Chapter

As Curb Your Enthusiasm concluded its final season in 2024, Smoove embraced this transition with enthusiasm, eager to embark on his next creative endeavor.

In collaboration with Jarrod Moses, the founder and CEO of United Entertainment Group, Smoove aims to bring his comedic flair to the advertising world through their new venture, which promises to blend creativity with humor.

Redefining Advertising

Smoove’s ambitions extend into the realm of advertising with their venture named The First Darrin. He aspires to redefine how brands convey their messages through comedy. ‘I want to capture your attention immediately. My goal is to showcase a fresh approach to storytelling, incorporating a rhythm that keeps audiences engaged, even when they are multitasking,’ he explained.

Moses, who refers to Smoove as a ‘comedic genius,’ possesses substantial experience in the industry, having co-founded the New York Comedy Festival over two decades ago. He met Smoove during that period when Smoove was concentrating on establishing himself in stand-up comedy.

Forging Alliances

‘I recognized JB’s potential when we collaborated on a campaign for White Claw. His comedic ingenuity was evident, and it made me realize he could excel in the creative advertising landscape,’ Moses shared.

He emphasized that their partnership resulted from this mutual recognition, culminating in a robust business plan that is now coming to fruition.

Embracing the Future

As Smoove forges ahead in shaping a diverse career that spans comedy, television, and advertising, he remains committed to his core values of perseverance and creativity. With his experiences as a wealth of knowledge and insight, it is clear that his journey is just beginning, and audiences eagerly await the laughter he will undoubtedly continue to bring.
