Former MLB star Darryl Strawberry has issued a heartfelt message of thanks to President Donald Trump for granting him a pardon that marks a significant turning point in his life. The announcement, which came from the White House, highlights Strawberry’s remarkable journey of redemption and recovery.
Strawberry, an eight-time All-Star with the New York Mets, reflected on his tumultuous past, acknowledging how his struggles with addiction led to numerous legal troubles, as well as challenges both on and off the field. He emphasized that the pardon validates his ongoing transformation.
In a touching post on Instagram, Strawberry expressed his gratitude to President Trump. He wrote, “Thank you, President @realdonaldtrump for my full pardon and for finalizing this part of my life, allowing me to be truly free and clean from all of my past.” This statement was accompanied by three personal photographs of Strawberry and Trump.
Strawberry recounted the moment he received the surprising phone call from President Trump. He described the scene as he tended to his wife, who was recovering from surgery, when his phone rang incessantly. In disbelief, he answered a call from Washington D.C.
“To my amazement, the lady on the line said, ‘Darryl Strawberry, you have a call from the President of the United States, Donald Trump.’ I put it on speakerphone with my wife nearby, and President Trump spoke warmly about my baseball days in NYC. He praised me as one of the greatest players of the ’80s and celebrated the Mets,” Strawberry shared. The President went on to announce that he would grant Strawberry a full pardon from his troubled past.
Strawberry described the moment as overwhelming, characterized by gratitude and a renewed commitment to his faith. He expressed his deep appreciation for this act of kindness, attributing it to God’s intervention in his life.
The latter part of Strawberry’s career was marred by various legal troubles and personal challenges. In 1999, during his time with the New York Yankees, he faced an arrest for soliciting sex from an undercover officer, resulting in a suspension and probation. His struggles with addiction continued to affect his career, contributing to a suspension for the entirety of the 2000 season after he tested positive for cocaine.
Strawberry’s journey included serving time in prison, with a notable 11-month sentence for violating rules at a treatment facility. Throughout this period, he openly acknowledged his substance abuse issues, providing a candid view of his challenges with addiction.
Strawberry’s path to recovery was significantly influenced by his faith and commitment to sobriety. He found solace and support through his wife, whom he met at a drug recovery convention. This relationship has played a crucial role in his transformation.
He stated, “This has nothing to do with politics — it’s about a man, President Trump, caring deeply for a friend. God used him as a vessel to set me free forever! I’m Free; I’m Free; I’m So Humbled And Thankful.”
During his prime years, Strawberry was recognized as one of the premier talents in baseball. His career highlights include being named the National League Rookie of the Year and earning eight All-Star selections. Over his nine prime seasons, he boasted a batting average of .263 with an impressive .875 OPS, averaging 36 home runs and 108 RBIs per 162 games.
Strawberry’s legacy also includes two World Series championships with the Mets in 1986, and additional titles with the Yankees in 1996, 1998, and 1999. Notably, he remained the Mets’ franchise leader in home runs with 252 until Pete Alonso surpassed him earlier this season.
The recent pardon represents a pivotal moment for Strawberry, allowing him to move forward without the burden of his past mistakes. He remains dedicated to using his experiences to inspire others facing similar struggles.
Through faith-based initiatives and support for recovery programs, Strawberry hopes to serve as a beacon of hope. His story is a powerful reminder that with support and determination, it is possible to overcome even the darkest of challenges.
In reflecting on his journey, Strawberry shared, “This experience has deepened my faith and commitment to working for His kingdom as a true follower of Jesus Christ.” His message resonates with those who have faced adversity, illustrating the importance of grace and redemption.
