A devastating incident unfolded in Ybor City, Florida, early Saturday morning when a 22-year-old man, attempting to evade law enforcement, crashed his vehicle into a crowded outdoor patio bar. The collision resulted in four fatalities and left at least 13 others injured. Tampa’s police chief characterized this calamity as an utterly senseless act.
Authorities have identified the driver as Silas Kenneth Sampson, who now faces multiple serious charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide and another four counts related to aggravated fleeing to evade capture, as detailed in the records of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Sampson is currently detained at the Falkenburg Road Jail, where he remains without bond.
According to Tampa Police Department Chief Lee Bercaw, around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, officers were monitoring a vehicle involved in dangerous street racing on Interstate 275.
The reckless driving continued as Sampson exited the interstate and headed directly into the heart of downtown Ybor City.
Approximately 15 minutes later, the Florida Highway Patrol discovered Sampson and initiated a pursuit that included an unsuccessful attempt at a precision immobilization technique, known as a PIT maneuver.
Despite the brief pursuit, the Florida Highway Patrol ultimately withdrew as Sampson sped toward 7th Avenue, where he lost control of his vehicle. The car veered off its path and violently collided with a local gay bar called Bradley’s On 7th, hitting patrons enjoying the outdoor area, as confirmed by Chief Bercaw.
Sampson reportedly struck more than a dozen individuals who had gathered on the patio, leading to the deaths of three victims on site. Tragically, a fourth victim succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. As of current reports, two individuals remain in critical condition, while seven others have stabilized; two were treated and discharged, and two received care at the scene.
Officials have stated that, at this time, there is no evidence suggesting the attack was targeted against the victims or the establishment itself.
In the aftermath of the collision, HCSO released footage showing Sampson being escorted into the Orient Road Jail.
The city released a statement urging the community to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts as authorities work to achieve justice for those affected by this tragedy.
Eyewitness Howard Hopkins shared his harrowing experience with FOX 13 Tampa Bay, describing the chaos as the car jumped the curb, struck the building, and plowed through the crowd gathered on the bar’s patio.
Hopkins vividly recalled the scene, stating, “Tables flew, chairs were scattered, and bodies were thrown everywhere — it was an unimaginable sight.” His account reflects the chaos and horror of the situation.
The owner of Bradley’s on 7th, Bradley Nelson, addressed the incident in a heartfelt statement on Facebook, remarking on the horrific nature of the event.
He expressed sympathy for the victims, saying, “This incident has been incredibly traumatic for my staff and myself. Our thoughts are with the families of those who were killed and with all the injured. At Bradley’s on 7th, we pride ourselves on being a close-knit community. Our loyal patrons are an extension of our family, and we ask that everyone keeps those affected in their prayers.”
Nelson also expressed gratitude to the first responders who swiftly arrived to aid in managing the chaotic scene.
He commended the Tampa Police Department, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Highway Patrol, recognizing their exemplary response under such distressing circumstances. “The promptness with which this incident was addressed should be noted by everyone,” Nelson stated.
In a move to honor the victims and respect the emotional state of the staff, Bradley’s on 7th will remain closed until Monday.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor also took to social media to address the incident, empathizing with the collective grief experienced throughout the city. “The events that transpired in Ybor City last night were heartbreaking,” Mayor Castor wrote in a post on X. “Families are in mourning, first responders are affected, and our entire city is mourning this loss. My thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted. Investigations are ongoing, and our commitment to ensuring community safety remains unwavering.”
As the Florida Highway Patrol undertakes the investigation, the community grapples with the heavy toll of this tragic event, reflecting on lives lost and futures altered forever.
