A teenager from Long Island is making headlines for his unique approach to supporting veterans and active duty service members by providing them with free meals all year. Will Burrell, 18, is the founder of Will’s Smashburgers located in Mattituck, New York, and he recently shared his inspiring story on America’s Newsroom.
Burrell launched his business less than a year ago, initially as a high school junior. His entrepreneurial journey began after he organized a charitable dinner, a move that ignited his passion for giving back.

Burrell expressed his joy in seeing the impact of this small gesture on the individuals receiving the meals. He stated, “We try and spread mental health, positivity and awareness. I love giving back and seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they read those bags.”
This summer, Burrell encountered a heartwarming moment when a group of U.S. Coast Guard members unexpectedly walked into his restaurant. They were delighted to learn they could enjoy a free meal, and Burrell described their joyful reactions. “They were ecstatic, and it just felt great to give back to them,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Burrell has set his sights on furthering his education. He has applied to Cornell University and is optimistic about his future endeavors.
Burrell’s initiative is not isolated; several other restaurants and café chains across the nation also honor veterans and active service members on Veterans Day. Many establishments offer free meals or special deals on this important occasion.
