Democratic Socialists Eager to Fill Vacant Assembly Seat Following Mamdani’s Mayoral Victory

Democratic Socialists Prepare for Assembly District 36 Race

A competitive race is unfolding as multiple Democratic Socialists of America members aim to secure the vacant New York State Assembly seat, recently vacated by Zohran Mamdani. The 34-year-old Mamdani shocked many by winning the mayoral race, leading to increased interest in his former position.

Rana Abdelhamid: A Promising Candidate

Among the frontrunners is Rana Abdelhamid, an Egyptian American community organizer. She has officially declared her candidacy for Assembly District 36, which encompasses the Astoria neighborhood of Queens. Her intention to run has been confirmed through official state Board of Elections records.

Growing Support Within the DSA

Alongside Abdelhamid, the local Democratic Socialists of America leadership has rallied behind Diana Moreno, a former co-chair of Queens DSA, as another viable candidate. Additionally, Mary Jobaida, known for her past candidacy in a nearby district, may also enter the race, adding to the sense of competition.

Abdelhamid’s Background and Influence in the Community

Abdelhamid has played an integral role within the New York City DSA, which boasts over 11,200 members, including influential figures like Mamdani and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Tiffany Cabán, the local city council member representing Astoria, is also affiliated with the DSA.

Securing a win for the Democratic Socialists in this race would represent a significant boost in their influence over New York’s political landscape.

Past Political Experiences Shape Current Aspirations

Rana Abdelhamid previously aimed to challenge then-Representative Carolyn Maloney in the 2022 primaries. Although she ultimately exited the race following redistricting, her political ambitions remain undeterred.

Advocacy and Community Work

Abdelhamid is actively engaged with the Middle Eastern and North African communities in Astoria. She has Advocated for improved demographic data collection concerning MENA populations in New York. Furthermore, she established a women’s self-defense organization named Malikah, demonstrating her commitment to community empowerment.

Diana Moreno: Another Strong Contender

Diana Moreno, who also resides in Astoria, is another strong candidate for Mamdani’s former seat. She co-chaired the NYC-DSA’s Queens branch from 2021 to 2023, showcasing her leadership within the organization. Moreno has served as the communications coordinator for DSA and held the position of deputy director of the New Immigrant Community Empowerment group.

Two weeks prior, Moreno expressed her enthusiasm for running for Assembly by saying, “I’m preparing to run for Zohran’s Assembly seat so our future mayor has an unwavering ally in Albany committed to helping him deliver an affordable NYC!” The urgency in her voice reflects her commitment to serving the working families of Queens.

The Push for Action in Albany

Moreno initially hesitated to run after being approached by the DSA, citing her responsibilities as a mother. However, she later reconsidered, motivated by what she describes as a troubling increase in authoritarianism from the previous administration. Her campaign will likely focus on providing free and universal childcare, a critical issue for working families in her district.

Community Engagement and Activism

Moreno’s activism includes participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations throughout New York City. Her involvement in these movements has bolstered her appeal among progressive voters, positioning her as a candidate with strong community ties.

A New Era for Queens Politics

The race for the Assembly District 36 seat has gained significant attention, with strong support for both Abdelhamid and Moreno. As each candidate campaigns, the Democratic Socialists seek to transform the political climate in Queens and beyond. With their combined efforts, they hope to shift the focus on creating equitable legislation that addresses the urgent needs of their constituents.

The future of Queens politics hangs in the balance as these candidates prepare for an intense race. The engagement from the DSA and their growing support indicates a shift in the traditional political landscape.
