Kai Trump, granddaughter of former President Donald Trump, demonstrated significant improvement during her second day at the LPGA tournament, following a challenging first day. Competing at The Annika, she notably dropped eight strokes from her initial round.
Reflecting on her performance after Friday’s game, Trump expressed that a shift in her mindset contributed to her better play. She noted feeling more peaceful compared to the pressure she experienced on her debut day.
“For the first day I was definitely really nervous. I think the nerves just got to me,” she explained. “When I went out there today, I felt very calm and peaceful, to be honest with you. That’s why I played better,” she added.
Trump focused on her preparation leading up to the tournament. She acknowledged that nerves are a natural part of competitive sports but emphasized the importance of managing them. With a positive mindset, she aimed to soften her anxiety.
Despite facing difficulties early on Friday, including mistakes on the third, fourth, and fifth holes, Trump rebounded impressively by scoring birdies on three of her next six holes.
Addressing her early blunders, Trump remarked, “Things are going to happen. Once it happens, you can’t go back in time and fix it. The best thing I could do is move on. Like I told my caddie, Allan, I kind of just started laughing. It is what it is. We got that out of the way, so let’s just move on. It was pretty easy to move on after that.”
Despite her improved performance, Trump finished last in the 108-player field and will not advance in the tournament. She wrapped up the two rounds with a total score of 18-over-par 158, which placed her 27 strokes behind the leader, Grace Kim, who scored 65-66.
Though she did not make the cut, her resilience and attitude earned her admiration from fellow competitors, including LPGA star Charley Hull, who expressed her support. Hull noted that the event was particularly challenging and highlighted Trump’s strength in facing such a tough course on her debut.
“That’s really good considering this is not just an easy LPGA event. This is probably one of the harder courses that we play on,” Hull commented. She empathized with the pressure Trump faced, stating that entering her first LPGA event could be overwhelming. “I remember my first event. I was really nervous, and she’s got a lot of pressure on her and a lot of eyes on her.”
Although the tournament did not yield the desired results for Trump, her experience at The Annika serves as a stepping stone in her golf career. Gaining insights from the highs and lows of her performance will be invaluable as she continues to navigate the professional golfing landscape.
Moving forward, Trump plans to use the lessons learned from her first LPGA event to bolster her confidence and refine her skills. In interviews, she expressed a strong desire to continue participating in competitive golf, indicating that this experience motivated her to improve.
