Officials in Charlotte, North Carolina, are gearing up for an anticipated federal immigration crackdown, which they dubbed an invasion. City leaders have vowed to stand against potential raids, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding the rights of migrants within their community.

During a press conference on Friday, local leaders called on residents to engage in peaceful protests and to document any actions taken by federal agents from a safe distance. Their united stance criticizes the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement tactics previously witnessed in various cities across the nation.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell, who has immigrant roots, expressed her concerns about the current political climate. She stated, “We are living in the strangest of times, when a felonious reality TV personality is occupying the White House. Unfortunately, we have seen this movie before, and now they want to film an episode of the ‘Shock and Awe’ show here in our city.”

This show of solidarity followed an announcement from Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden, who revealed that federal authorities had indicated U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents would start an enforcement operation in Charlotte this weekend or early next week.

The community is bracing itself for a level of federal activity similar to prior operations seen in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles. These operations have raised alarms, as agents have conducted raids targeting local businesses, churches, and community venues frequented by migrants.

Democratic state Representative Jordan Lopez highlighted the alarming consequences that have unfolded in previous immigration enforcement actions. He stated, “We’ve seen what has taken place in other cities across this country when the federal government gets involved. The undisciplined agents pointing weapons at unarmed civilians and the indiscriminate rounding up of individuals in their homes have left a dark mark on law enforcement practices.”

Despite the impending federal operation, local and state officials insist they have received no advance notice from the Trump administration regarding enforcement in Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reaffirmed its lack of authority to enforce federal immigration laws and clarified that it will not be involved in any planning or execution of these operations.

Community groups are proactively preparing for the potential fallout. They are training volunteers to effectively document any federal enforcement actions while also ensuring that migrants in the area are aware of their rights amidst the looming crackdown.

Héctor Vaca, the training and immigrant justice director for Action NC, characterized the federal government’s approach as an invasion and a racist campaign of terror. His comments reflect a broader sentiment among local activists who express concern about the destructive impact of federal immigration policies on families and individuals.

President Trump has targeted largely Democratic cities for immigration sweeps in an effort to bolster his mass deportation agenda. Earlier this year, the administration reversed a policy established by the Biden administration that had prohibited immigration raids in sensitive locations, including schools, churches, and hospitals.

Additionally, Trump has deployed the National Guard to assist immigration enforcement in cities governed by Democrats, including Chicago and Los Angeles. However, these actions have sparked legal challenges from state officials who argue that they overstep federal authority.

Democratic Governor Josh Stein emphasized that the majority of individuals caught in federal sweeps lack criminal convictions, some of them being American citizens. He urged residents, “If you see any inappropriate behavior, use your phones to record and notify local law enforcement, who will continue to keep our communities safe long after these federal agents leave. That’s the North Carolina way.”

Incoming council member JD Mazuera Arias, a Colombian-American who became a naturalized citizen in 2021, shared his personal apprehensions about potential raids. Understanding the fear that such operations can instill, he committed to ensuring that local resources and tax revenues will not go towards immigration enforcement. He criticized federal sweeps in other cities for prioritizing quotas and control rather than public safety.

Mazuera Arias declared, “Our Queen City will not become a staging ground for fear. We will not confuse cruelty with safety. And we will not allow the politics of intimidation to define who belongs here.”

Cameron Pruette, the executive director of Charlotte’s Freedom Center for Social Justice, encouraged residents to support immigrant-owned businesses as a means of solidarity. He prompted citizens to take action through peaceful and prayerful demonstrations, emphasizing the moral clarity of their stance.
