Kip Summers reflects on his journey into winemaking, recalling a pivotal visit to a Napa winery that left him inspired. “I toured a winery in Napa and thought, ‘Wow, I think I’m in the wrong business. I need to figure out how to do this,'” Summers stated. This realization set him on a path that eventually led him to collaborate with Vienneau at a family-operated winery north of Nashville.

“We started the winery here with the intention of providing a little slice of wine country to this region,” Summers explained. Yet, the venture has not been without its hurdles.

Summers elaborated on the challenges presented by Middle Tennessee’s unique climate. The region experiences cool nights paired with warm days and varying humidity levels throughout the summer. This creates specific conditions that affect grape cultivation.

Vienneau, who joined Summers at Arrington Vineyards in 2008, added insights into the types of grapes that thrive in this environment. “It’s almost impossible to grow Cabernet here in Tennessee. We’ve had to adapt to growing hybrids that are more resilient to our climate, yet still yield exceptional wines,” he noted.

An Innovative Approach to Winemaking

This adaptation has resulted in wines now featured in the Fox News American Wine Club. One standout is Antiquity, a red blend aged for a year in used Tennessee whiskey barrels, offering a unique twist on traditional winemaking.

“The wine that’s part of this Fox Wine Club is made from a grape called Chambourcin, which is well-known in Virginia and New York and has found a home in many eastern U.S. states,” Summers shared. This creative approach has led to a consistently high-quality dry red wine year after year.

Versatility in Production

Vienneau emphasized the versatility of the Chambourcin grape, stating that it has enabled the vineyard to produce varied styles of wine. “We create a Ruby-style port from Chambourcin, as well as a dry Rosé and even a sparkling wine made using the traditional French method,” he explained.

This diversity in winemaking styles speaks to the vineyard’s commitment to showcasing what Tennessee can offer. The inviting setting of Arrington Vineyards adds an extra layer of appeal, attracting visitors from Nashville and beyond.
