Senate Democrats have initiated a call for an investigation into what they characterize as “partisan messaging” employed by the Trump administration on official government platforms amid the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
Senators Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts and Adam Schiff from California, alongside other colleagues, are urging the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office to investigate whether the Trump administration transgressed federal laws with messages that assigned blame to Democrats for the shutdown.
In a letter dispatched to the GAO on November 9, lawmakers expressed concern that announcements from various agencies resembled nothing more than partisan rhetoric and lacked a tie to legitimate official business.
Of particular note are the messages posted on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s website, which claimed: “The Radical Left is going to shut down the government and inflict massive pain on the American people unless they get their $1.5 trillion wish list of demands. The Trump administration wants to keep the government open for the American people.”
In light of this, the lawmakers are questioning whether such statements from various agencies breached federal laws prohibiting the use of government funds for “publicity or propaganda purposes.”
They highlighted that longstanding federal appropriations law delineates prohibition on the executive branch utilizing federal funds for publicity or partisan purposes. The letter explicitly mentioned that federal law forbids agencies from employing any appropriated funding to create publicity aimed at influencing Congress regarding proposed legislation or appropriations.
Despite these claims, Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, argues that Democrats are attempting to redirect attention from their role in the shutdown.
Spakovsky described the accusation as an absurd distraction from substantial governance failures. He stated that the assertion blaming Democrats for the shutdown is grounded in truth since they voted numerous times to prolong the government shutdown. This claim holds that truth serves as a robust defense against allegations of partisan messaging.
In alignment with this perspective, the White House also conveyed similar sentiments in their response to inquiries about the matter.
Abigail Jackson, a spokeswoman for the White House, affirmed in a statement provided to Fox News Digital that it is an objective fact that Democrats bear responsibility for the government shutdown. She stated that the Trump administration merely relayed accurate information to the American people.
A GAO spokesperson, Jessica Baxter, confirmed to Fox News Digital on Friday that the agency has acknowledged the request from lawmakers and is currently in the process of evaluating its merit.
Baxter indicated, “I can confirm that GAO has received this congressional request. There is a protocol that we follow to assess whether we move forward with investigations, and we are actively navigating this process right now.”
The coalition of lawmakers who signed the letter includes notable figures such as Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and Ron Wyden of Oregon.
In a broader context, President Trump signed a bill to fund the government again on Wednesday, as the negative repercussions of funding lapses began to escalate. Federal employees experienced missed paychecks, and delays at airports occurred due to staffing shortages among air traffic controllers.
The recently signed legislation maintains government funding at fiscal year 2025 levels until January 30, allowing lawmakers a window to finalize a more extensive appropriations measure for fiscal year 2026.
