Honoring Katie: The Urgent Call for Immigration Accountability in Illinois

When the Department of Homeland Security reached out to honor my daughter Katie through the initiative known as Operation Midway Blitz, I had my concerns. I could not commit to anything in my daughter’s name without understanding the full implications. After discussions with DHS, I recognized the goals behind this operation, which aim to uphold laws meant to protect families like mine while also amplifying Katie’s tragic story. This convinced me that her untimely death would serve a higher purpose.

Katie was violently killed on January 19, 2025, in an incident that no parent should ever have to endure. She was sitting in a vehicle that came to a stop at a red light when an illegal immigrant, driving under the influence and traveling nearly 80 miles per hour, crashed into them. The driver, Julio Cucul-Bol, a Guatemalan national residing in the United States illegally and using fraudulent Mexican identification, robbed us of a vibrant, loving young woman who had her entire life ahead of her.

To make matters worse, after wreaking havoc on our lives, he fled the scene. With no regard for the victims he just harmed, he did not attempt to provide aid, nor did he call for help. He ran away, exhibiting a selfish and cowardly attitude that underscores why he should never have been permitted in our country in the first place.

The facts seem brutally straightforward: If this man had been barred from entering the United States in accordance with federal law, he would not have been on that road that night, and my daughter would still be alive. If Illinois had leadership that prioritized public safety over political agendas, and if the state had not continued with its sanctuary policies that effectively protected this individual, Katie might still be among us.

For months, I have asserted that preventing chaos before it occurs is significantly easier than dealing with the aftermath of tragedies like mine. The old saying rings true: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I have consistently challenged Illinois politicians to illustrate how they aimed to reconcile public safety with their open-border and sanctuary policies. The lack of response has been deafening.

The Necessity of Accountability

I have repeatedly questioned what oversight or auditing systems were established once Illinois leaders opted to open the borders to everyone. Who was responsible for ensuring our communities remained safe? Who was monitoring who entered, where they traveled, or what resources they were receiving?

Instead of exercising compassion or foresight, Illinois officials not only encouraged but also incentivized illegal immigration, conveying a dangerous message that anyone could come to our state without facing repercussions. This is not compassion; it is an act of cruelty. It disregards the safety of residents and shows no empathy for the hardships faced by those making the perilous journey.

A Glimpse into DHS and ICE

After the loss of Katie, I met with numerous professionals from DHS and ICE in Chicago. I also had an extended conversation with Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, during which we discussed how current open-border policies are destabilizing our neighborhoods. The contrast in attitudes was striking. The individuals I met demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and dedication. They are not the villains that some politicians and activists attempt to portray. They are dedicated Americans striving to restore order and balance after years of dangerous neglect.

It makes one wonder whether any of ICE’s critics have taken the time to speak directly with these agents or staff members. If they had, I believe they would see what I witnessed: committed Americans working diligently to enhance our community’s safety.

The Silence of Illinois Politicians

Illinois politicians, on the other hand, have displayed a troubling lack of compassion. They have overlooked Katie’s devastating story because acknowledging it would require them to confront the shortcomings of their policies. Their silence appears driven not by grief or guilt, but by a desire for political self-preservation. It seems that the pursuit of inflated census numbers and congressional representation holds greater significance than protecting innocent lives.

Katie’s death became a grim reminder of the high stakes involved in their games of political maneuvering. With her loss, we also lost everything she might have achieved — her future dreams, potential family, and the joys of life. I will never have the privilege of walking her down the aisle or witnessing her as a mother. These are the real, lasting consequences of failed political leadership.

Time for Change in Illinois

Current politicians in Illinois should reflect on their actions and step away from public office in shame. This brings me to my support for Operation Midway Blitz. It is now time to reestablish accountability within our immigration system, placing the safety of American citizens above political interests. We must take meaningful action to honor Katie’s memory, not merely in words but through tangible deeds.

As her father, I seek justice for Katie and for countless families who suffer as we do. It is crucial that we confront the consequences of unchecked immigration policies and work towards ensuring that such tragedies do not recur.
