Calls for Action Against Sanctuary State Policies Amid Trucking Safety Concerns

In a critical appeal, Florida Congressman Byron Donalds urges a federal crackdown on sanctuary-state policies. These laws allow illegal immigrants to secure commercial drivers licenses, raising alarm after a recent joint operation between ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol led to the arrest of 70 illegal immigrants. Among those apprehended, 34 were accused of driving large trucks unlawfully within the United States.

“Some states prioritize sanctuary policies over national laws, leaving citizens in other states to bear the consequences,” Donalds stated in an interview. He emphasizes that certain blue states are effectively disregarding existing laws to shelter individuals who evade immigration rules.

He argues that this situation poses a significant national safety risk, particularly when foreign nationals operating heavy trucks struggle to understand U.S. road signs or traffic laws. Such drivers potentially endanger the lives of American citizens. In his words, “Americans doing the right thing deserve our protection, not to be at risk from drivers who lack basic understanding of our laws and language.”

The WEIGH Act: A Legislative Response

In light of these findings, Donalds has introduced legislation known as the WEIGH Act. If passed, this bill would enhance the federal government’s capability to prevent states from issuing commercial drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. It would also impose penalties on states that continue such practices.

“The WEIGH Act aims to empower the Department of Transportation with greater authority,” Donalds explained. “It will also enable the Department of Treasury to withhold federal funds from states that allow these dangerous practices to continue.”

By targeting the root of the issue, Donalds believes that states would be compelled to take corrective actions. “The goal is to safeguard American lives, and if the repercussions of these policies are felt financially, states will be forced to comply with safety regulations,” he added.

Checks at Weigh Stations

One of the key components of the proposed legislation is the authorization for the Department of Transportation to conduct immigration and English proficiency checks at weigh stations nationwide. If drivers do not meet the required standards, they could face detention.

“This allows federal authorities to take decisive action against noncompliant drivers,” Donalds remarked. “Implementing these checks at weigh stations will significantly deter states from maintaining sanctuary policies concerning commercial driver licenses.”

Operation Guardian: A Response to Public Safety Concerns

The urgent demand for action follows ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s recent initiative dubbed Operation Guardian. This operation resulted in 70 arrests over two days, including numerous individuals operating commercial vehicles without legal permission.

ICE reported that out of the detainees, 26 were driving trucks with commercial licenses issued by sanctuary states, while several others were completely unlicensed. This operation underscores the critical need for collaboration between federal and state agencies to address public safety issues stemming from unauthorized drivers.

Marcos Charles, ICE’s executive associate director for Enforcement and Removal Operations, identified the participation of illegal immigrants in commercial driving as a severe risk to highway safety. “Many of the apprehended drivers operated 80,000-pound vehicles and could not read basic English, posing an unacceptable danger to all road users,” he stated.

Lawmakers React

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt expressed strong support for efforts to enforce regulations ensuring that commercial drivers have legal status and proficiency in English. He agrees that addressing this issue goes beyond state lines and carries national implications.

“The initiative reflects a commitment to upholding public safety standards, and the state will persist in enforcing regulations that protect our citizens from the potential dangers of unlicensed drivers,” Gov. Stitt affirmed.

Donalds pointed out that the problem extends beyond Oklahoma, highlighting a tragic incident in Florida where a truck driver, reportedly unable to comply with basic traffic regulations, caused a fatal accident. “This is an ongoing crisis, and the patterns of careless behavior must cease,” he stated.

A Call to Sanctuary States

In addressing governors of sanctuary states, Donalds emphasized the urgency of reevaluating their policies. He stated, “The notion that radical left immigration policies serve the interests of Americans is misguided. Nationwide, these policies lead to increased risk and hazards that compromise public safety.”

An Instruction for Accountability

Every state governor carries the responsibility to safeguard the safety of their roads. As Donalds concluded, “If states refuse to rectify their policies, the federal government must step in to protect our citizens.” His message is unmistakable: accountability is key.

Supporting Donalds’s concerns, Art Del Cueto, Vice President of the National Border Patrol Council, expressed disbelief at the current situation. “The reality is alarming; those who are in this country illegally should not have access to commercial drivers licenses at all,” he asserted.

Moving forward, ICE plans to expand operations targeting unauthorized drivers in states across the nation. Previous operations, like one conducted in September, led to 120 arrests, including numerous commercial drivers with criminal backgrounds. The focus remains clear: to remove illegal aliens from U.S. roadways and ensure the safety of American citizens.
