The New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy recently expressed his frustration towards Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen. This incident unfolded after Rantanen was ejected during a high-stakes game for a boarding hit on Islanders defenseman Alex Romanov.
In the closing moments of Tuesday night’s match, Rantanen, who has emerged as the Stars’ leading scorer with 27 points this season, delivered a hit from behind that caused Romanov to crash violently into the boards. As a result of the play, Rantanen received a five-minute major penalty for boarding and was subsequently removed from the game.
As Rantanen made his way off the ice, cameras picked up a heated verbal exchange from Roy directed at the player.
In-Game Tensions Soar
Following the hit, Roy could be heard saying, ‘You’re not gonna finish that game,’ seemingly referring to the implications for their next matchup in New York. His comments highlighted the high emotions surrounding the game and the physicality involved in the sport.
Even after the game concluded, Roy continued to criticize Rantanen’s play. He expressed concern for Romanov’s well-being, stating, ‘I hope he’s going to be OK. At this moment, I don’t know exactly what it is.’
Roy emphasized the importance of player safety, saying, ‘When you see the number, you have to lay off. Everybody knows that. You don’t go through the guy.’ His remarks reflect a broader sentiment within the league, where player safety has become a priority.
Roy also praised his team’s response after the incident, asserting, ‘I’m proud of the way our guys handled it afterwards. No one was happy to see someone get hurt like this. Like I said, to me, it’s disrespectful for our guy.’
Ongoing Player Safety Conversations
Romanov did not require hospitalization following the hit, but his specific condition remained uncertain in the immediate aftermath. The NHL Department of Player Safety has announced that it will review the incident to determine whether further action is necessary. However, reports suggest that Rantanen is unlikely to face any additional discipline.
Stars coach Glen Gulutzan came to Rantanen’s defense post-game, offering an alternative perspective on the incident. He indicated that Rantanen’s skate may have been inadvertently clipped by Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield before the hit occurred. Gulutzan stated, ‘It’s just one of those hockey plays that happened. I hope Romanov is OK. It’s a dangerous play for everybody.’
A Dramatic Game Result
The game concluded with a narrow 3-2 victory for New York. The Islanders celebrated despite the tense end to the match, which saw Wyatt Johnston’s would-be game-tying goal rejected due to goalie interference just as the game’s clock ticked down to 0.1 seconds.
This clash marks just one of the many instances of physical play that can escalate quickly in the NHL, reminding fans and players alike of the sport’s intense nature. As discussions continue about player safety and the rules governing hits, both teams will reflect on the impacts such incidents can have on player health and the outcome of close games.
