Rep. Greg Steube, a Republican from Florida, is set to file a motion to censure his Democratic colleague Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. This action follows an indictment claiming that she misappropriated federal disaster funds to finance her campaign in 2021.

In an announcement on the social media platform X, Steube declared, “Tomorrow morning I will be filing a privileged motion to censure Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick and remove her from all committees.” He described the alleged misconduct as an egregious breach of public trust, stating, “Stealing $5 million in taxpayer disaster funds from FEMA is beyond indefensible. Millions of Floridians have relied on FEMA after devastating hurricanes, and that money was intended to assist actual disaster victims.”

Beyond just seeking censure, Steube indicated his intention to pursue Cherfilus-McCormick’s expulsion from Congress. He emphasized this point by stating, “Once House Ethics concludes their investigation or she is formally convicted, rest assured I will move to expel her from Congress.”

The Indictment and Allegations

The allegations stem from a statement issued by the Justice Department, which accused Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, of participating in a scheme to steal $5 million. The funds were linked to a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract operated through a family healthcare company.

The indictment claims that the defendants colluded to misappropriate these funds, routing them through various accounts to conceal their origin. Prosecutors assert a significant portion of these misappropriated funds was channeled into campaign contributions for Cherfilus-McCormick’s congressional campaign and for the benefit of the defendants themselves.

Additional accusations include claims that Cherfilus-McCormick conspired with her tax preparer, David K. Spencer, to file a false federal tax return. They allegedly misrepresented political campaigning and personal expenditures as business deductions, inflating charitable contributions to minimize her tax responsibilities.

In response to the allegations, Attorney General Pam Bondi characterized Cherfilus-McCormick’s actions as particularly selfish and cynical. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Jason A. Reding Quiñones, emphasized that the indictment serves as a clear message that no individual is above the law.

FBI Director Kash Patel also expressed outrage over the allegations, stating, “This individual and her family allegedly stole money from FEMA and then laundered it through friends for their own personal benefits, including her campaign accounts. Today, the FBI and partners at DOJ took action. No one is above the law.”

If convicted, Cherfilus-McCormick could face a sentence of up to 53 years in prison, according to prosecutors. Her brother could face up to 35 years, while Leblanc and Spencer could see sentences of up to 10 and 33 years, respectively.
