Arrests Made in Connection to Anarchist Vegan Cult Linked to Multiple Crimes Including Border Patrol Agent’s Murder

The alleged leader of a fringe vegan activist group on the West Coast has been arrested along with another member. Their organization has been linked to a series of crimes, including the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent.

The Maryland State Police confirmed the arrests of Jack “Ziz” LaSota, 34, from Berkeley, California, and Michelle Zajko, 32, from Media, Pennsylvania, along with an unidentified third person. These arrests took place on a Sunday afternoon and involved a number of charges that are not directly related to the murder of Agent David “Chris” Maland.

According to police reports, LaSota was taken into custody shortly after 2:30 p.m. on February 16. He faces several charges, including trespassing and obstructing justice. Zajko has been charged with the same offenses, but she is also accused of resisting arrest and possessing a handgun.

Both individuals are reportedly affiliated with a cult-like group known as the “Zizians.” This group promotes unconventional beliefs that intertwine artificial intelligence theories and veganism. Jessica Taylor, a former acquaintance, provided insight into the group’s ideology, stating that members embrace an anarchist perspective that critiques societal norms.

Taylor elaborated on their perspective, noting they believe that societal violence can justify personal acts of violence. This controversial viewpoint may reflect deeper themes of ideological extremism within the group.

Connection to Homicides

The Zizians have been linked to the murder of Agent Maland, which occurred near the Canadian border in January, as well as five additional homicides across Vermont, Pennsylvania, and California. This troubling association highlights the potential dangers posed by extremist groups.

Following the murder of Agent Maland, a nationwide manhunt was initiated for Zajko. This manhunt underscores law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to track individuals tied to serious criminal activities.

Background of Agent Maland

Agent Maland, a Minnesota native, had served in the Air Force and worked as a Border Patrol agent at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Newport Station. He dedicated nine years to military service and fifteen years to federal law enforcement. His untimely death raises questions about the broader safety issues facing law enforcement in the line of duty.

Details Surrounding the Murder

Details about Maland’s murder indicate it occurred during a traffic stop on January 20. German national Felix “Ophelia” Bauckholt and University of Washington student Teresa “Milo” Consuelo Youngblut were allegedly involved in the incident.

Authorities have reported that Zajko purchased two handguns in February 2024 in Mount Tabor, Vermont. These firearms were reportedly used in Maland’s shooting, adding another layer to the ongoing investigation. The Albany Times Union has previously cited court documents confirming this transaction.

Additional Criminal Links

Zajko has emerged as a person of interest in a double murder case in Pennsylvania as well as another homicide in California. Prosecutors have revealed limited information about these cases, indicating ongoing investigations into her activities and affiliations.

Collaboration Among Law Enforcement

In light of these developments, police have emphasized their collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies and the Office of the State’s Attorney in Allegany County. This coordinated effort aims to address the complexities of the ongoing investigations into these crimes and the linked criminal organizations.

Looking Ahead

The situation surrounding the Zizians raises serious concerns regarding the influence of extremist ideologies. As investigations continue, law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in addressing the potential threats posed by such groups.

The broader implications of these arrests highlight the intersections between criminal activity, radical beliefs, and public safety. Authorities are committed to unraveling the full extent of the criminal network tied to these individuals and their actions.

As further details emerge, community vigilance is paramount. The public is encouraged to be aware of local safety issues and to report any suspicious activities to authorities.
