Cheryl Hines, the acclaimed actress known for her role in the series Curb Your Enthusiasm, recently shared insights into the personal challenges stemming from her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s political career. As Kennedy navigates the tumultuous waters of his presidential campaign, Hines has felt the impact on her well-being in significant ways.
During a candid interview, Hines opened up about her struggles, revealing how the chaos of political life coincided with a tragic personal loss. She lost her nephew within the last year, an event that deeply affected her emotionally. Hines expressed, “I went through a lot of darkness and not only because of politics. Losing my nephew was heartbreaking, and dealing with that while navigating other challenges led to some genuinely dark times.”
Following RFK Jr.’s announcement of his presidential candidacy in April 2023, Hines described a surge in safety concerns for their family. The couple has faced heightened media scrutiny and public interest since Kennedy decided to run. Hines reflected on the dangerous aspects of this world, stating, “The fact that he didn’t [initially] get Secret Service protection when he was a presidential candidate is unacceptable. During that time, I would stay dressed with my shoes on until I was ready to go to bed because I didn’t know what was going to happen. There were reports of someone showing up at his rally with a loaded gun, asking to see Bobby. It was a real concern for our safety.”
In a harrowing incident after an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Hines recounted a meeting with her husband that triggered a severe physical reaction. She described how Kennedy returned with a bandage on his ear, a stark reminder of the perilous situation they find themselves in. The stress of the moment proved overwhelming for Hines. She recalled, “After that meeting, my body went into overdrive, and I broke out into hives. That evening, after Bobby mentioned the possibility of endorsing Trump, I reached an unmanageable level of stress.”
Hines experienced an alarming health scare as her body responded to the mounting pressure. As her lips began to swell and she feared her throat might close, she had no choice but to seek urgent medical attention. “The stress of it all was a lot. I had to go to urgent care because I was genuinely worried about my health,” she shared. This incident serves as a reminder of how intertwined political life can be with personal well-being.
While Kennedy has garnered support for his candidacy, he has also faced backlash for his controversial views on vaccines and public health policies. This controversy has complicated Hines’s public engagement, particularly regarding her marriage to him. “There are extremes on both sides regarding Bobby,” Hines noted. “Many people love and support him, but others will criticize him regardless of his accomplishments.”
Hines has become accustomed to questions regarding her relationship with RFK Jr. She emphasized the importance of articulating her love for him amidst external negativity. “I thought it was crucial to communicate why I love him and who we are to each other. By sharing my experience, I can clarify the truth based on my own words. That helps me cope with the challenges we face.”
Despite the hardships, Cheryl Hines remains committed to finding joy and meaning in her life. “I’m learning something new every day. I didn’t anticipate learning so much about politics, but it has brought me a sense of happiness to discover new things,” she revealed. Hines expressed optimism about her current place in life, indicating a newfound strength and appreciation for her surroundings.
As the campaign progresses, Hines continues to navigate the tumult of public life while fostering positivity within herself. She shares her belief that understanding the challenges and complexities of her husband’s political journey has made her more resilient. Hines is determined to focus on the positives, emphasizing, “I feel strong and ready, and I’m having a really good time with the people around me.” However, it’s clear that the intertwining of personal and political realms presents ongoing hurdles for the couple.
