The Seattle Seahawks secured their eighth victory of the season on Sunday, with standout receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba playing a pivotal role in the win over the Tennessee Titans.
In an impressive performance, Smith-Njigba, who currently leads the NFL in receiving yards, etched his name into the Seahawks’ record books. The second-year receiver from Ohio State amassed 167 receiving yards, which enabled him to set a new single-season franchise record.
Ahead of the game, Smith-Njigba required 150 yards to surpass D.K. Metcalf’s previous record of 1,303 receiving yards, established in 2020. During the second quarter, he achieved a remarkable 63-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Sam Darnold. This touchdown not only highlighted their chemistry but also paved the way for Smith-Njigba to break Metcalf’s record, accomplished in only 11 games this season.
By reaching the historic mark in the third quarter, Smith-Njigba underscores his potential for further accomplishments, with six games remaining in the regular season. His performance suggests that his record-setting season is far from over.
Smith-Njigba displayed immense promise during his rookie season in 2024, recording 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns. However, the offseason brought changes, as Darnold replaced Geno Smith, who was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. Questions lingered about the Seahawks’ offensive dynamics with this change in quarterback.
Despite these uncertainties, Darnold has thrived in offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s system, allowing Smith-Njigba to achieve new career highs in touchdowns and maintain a strong trajectory toward exceeding his rookie reception total.
With his latest performance, Smith-Njigba joins an elite group in the league’s history. He now holds the fifth-most receiving yards recorded in the first 11 games of a season since the Super Bowl era, surpassing the legendary Julio Jones.
The game was not without drama, as the Tennessee Titans’ offense, led by No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, kept the contest competitive. A touchdown reception by Chimere Dike narrowed the score to just six points in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, Seattle’s defense, resilient throughout the season, managed to hold off the Titans’ late-game surge.
Smith-Njigba finished the game with two touchdown receptions, contributing significantly to the Seahawks’ efforts alongside Zach Charbonnet, who added a rushing touchdown.
As the Seahawks gear up for their next match, Smith-Njigba aims to further enhance his already impressive season tally when the team hosts the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday.
