Senator Tom Cotton Issues Urgent Call for Support of Struggling American Farmers

Raised on a family cattle farm in Yell County, Arkansas, I learned firsthand how market volatility and economic pressures can impact agricultural businesses. Today, many farmers across America are facing unprecedented challenges due to rising costs and low commodity prices. These issues have been exacerbated by policies enacted during the last administration, leading to an urgent need for assistance.

Under the weight of increasing input costs, farmers are grappling with financial strain exacerbated by extended periods of low commodity prices and elevated borrowing expenses. The reality is that America’s farmers and ranchers are in a precarious situation, necessitating immediate support to sustain their livelihoods.

Legislative Efforts to Support Farmers

Earlier this year, I proudly supported significant reforms to the farm bill championed by Arkansas’s own Senator John Boozman, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee. This legislation is part of our Working Families Tax Cut initiative. Unlike previous iterations of farm support legislation, which fell short in providing substantial relief for farmers, the Working Families Tax Cut includes crucial provisions designed to aid farmers directly and streamline funding by addressing and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse.

However, the positive impacts of these reforms will not be felt until 2026. Moreover, many farmers have already committed to their crops for this year, missing out on potential benefits from rising commodity prices.

Immediate Challenges Facing Farmers

It is imperative to emphasize that America’s farmers require support urgently. In my home state of Arkansas, our farmers face significant financial losses— projected to be hundreds of dollars per acre on their soybean, corn, cotton, and long-grain rice crops. Forecasts indicate that cash crop receipts in Arkansas could plummet by $617 million by 2025, a concerning trend for our agricultural sector.

The situation is further complicated by the stark contrast between elevated input costs, ranging from seed to fertilizer and diesel, and the meager prices farmers receive for their crops. This disparity is at its highest level in 25 years, leading many farmers to struggle to make a profit or even maintain their operations. Alarmingly, in the past year, one in four Chapter 12 bankruptcies— a classification specifically pertaining to family farms and fishermen— originated in Arkansas.

The Role of Agriculture in National Security

The agricultural sector is not only vital for our economy but also essential for our national security. Food security directly impacts homeland safety; adversaries would exploit the economic hardships faced by generations of farmers. It is crucial to acknowledge the significant role farmers play in ensuring access to food and resources for all Americans.

In recent months, soybean farmers have encountered challenges stemming from trade relationships, particularly with communist China. This poses a unique dilemma for many Arkansan farmers, as soybeans are cultivated in a majority of the state’s counties, covering over 3.3 million acres. Although it is promising to hear that China plans to purchase significant amounts of soybeans in the coming years, we must adopt President Ronald Reagan’s Cold War philosophy: trust, but verify.

Engaging with Leadership for Farmer Support

In conversations with former President Donald Trump, I have conveyed the urgent struggles faced by farmers and ranchers not only in Arkansas but across the nation. His commitment to addressing these issues reflects the administration’s awareness and responsiveness to the needs of our agricultural community. With the conclusion of the Schumer Shutdown, we can intensify our efforts to provide essential relief that will help farmers navigate the challenges until the provisions of the Working Families Tax Cut become actionable next year.

A Call to Action for Farmers’ Futures

Our farmers and ranchers must receive the essential support they need to transition into the next growing season successfully. Securing adequate assistance is not merely about short-term relief; it is about ensuring that these vital agricultural producers can continue to thrive for future generations. The resilience of American agriculture rests on our shoulders, and we must act decisively to support those who feed our nation.

As we move forward, it is critical to keep the challenges faced by farmers at the forefront of public discourse. Ensuring a healthy, sustainable agricultural sector is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of policymakers, industry leaders, and all citizens committed to the wellbeing of our farmers.
