Dallas Church Hosts Controversial Drag Show Amid Political Tensions
A Texas church with a focus on LGBTQ advocacy held a drag show on Sunday, stirring controversy after one of the performers made inflammatory remarks aimed at Republicans, including Governor Greg Abbott, and expressed violent sentiments toward Trump supporters.
Cathedral of Hope in Dallas organized the event titled “Celebrating the Art of Drag,” which aimed to bless and affirm the artistic contributions of drag performers while supporting transgender individuals, all framed within their religious beliefs.
The church’s website stated that this event, celebrated as the second iteration of ‘Celebrating the Art of Drag Sunday,’ was a direct response to the numerous legislative measures introduced in Texas targeting drag artists and the transgender community.
Rev. Brooke Dooley, who doubles as the associate pastor for youth and young adults at Friends Congregational Church in College Station and identifies as the drag performer “Brock Bottom,” served as a guest preacher for the occasion.
