The recent changes in weather have brought a chill to my Walk Across America. After departing from New York City on September 1, I experienced the heat and humidity of summer. Now, as I traverse the scenic countryside of North Carolina, I find joy in the crisp, invigorating air. The clear Carolina nights reveal stars often obscured in my neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. This season particularly resonates with me as we approach Thanksgiving.
While walking down Drewry-Virginia Line Road, I stumbled upon Buchanan’s Store, the oldest family-operated store in North Carolina, established in 1878. This remarkable place stands as a testament to the generations that have passed through its doors, including everyone from Confederate veterans to modern-day travelers like myself.
The store’s exterior displays vibrant flowers, and its interior is adorned with Thanksgiving decorations. Sitting on the front steps with my drink, I took a moment of respite and reflected on the immense gratitude I feel this year.
Back home in Chicago, I have witnessed the birth of a community center that I have envisioned for over a decade. The sight of construction machinery at work, digging the foundation and framing the building, has been emotionally overwhelming. This revitalization marks a significant shift towards positive change in my neighborhood, which had long been devoid of such developments.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the countless donors and supporters whose faith made this dream a reality. Their commitment and resilience have transformed aspirations into tangible progress, and I am deeply appreciative of everyone working to build this center through various weather challenges.
To everyone who has greeted me along my journey—whether on bustling urban streets, tranquil backroads, or friendly front porches—I express my sincerest thanks. The kindness of everyday Americans has been heartwarming. From sweet honey buns and hearty sandwiches to heartfelt donations of food and shelter, you have nourished not only my body but also my spirit during difficult times. This generosity ensures that our children will inherit a brighter future.
This beautiful nation we call home, despite its complexity, has never ceased to inspire me. America is far from perfect, yet it presents us with opportunities to shape our destinies. My journey reflects my belief that everyone, regardless of past mistakes, can contribute positively to their communities. This nation encourages us with the idea that change is always possible, and I am committed to honoring that principle.
As I walk these country roads, I find immense gratitude for the sacred locations I have encountered: churches, historical landmarks, and sites of profound significance such as old slave trails and battlefields. Each step taken in these hallowed places serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Their trials and tribulations paved the way for our present, and it is our responsibility to build upon their legacy for a brighter tomorrow.
As we gather with loved ones for Thanksgiving, I reflect on the sadness that often accompanies this holiday. Too many young lives have been tragically cut short due to violence. The families of these individuals face profound heartache, especially during holidays when empty seats remind them of their loss. I keep their memories alive in my prayers, giving thanks for the richness they brought to our lives in their brief time on earth. Their legacy teaches us to treasure every moment we have.
Above all, I express my deep gratitude to God for guiding me along this path. His presence has been felt throughout my journey, woven into the fabric of my experiences. Each conversation and every encounter has highlighted His influence on my life. I remain thankful for His continued guidance, which reminds me that if He can lead someone like me, He can help anyone find their way home.
As my journey continues, I carry with me a promise of hope. The lessons of gratitude learned from every person encountered along the way serve as motivation to keep moving forward. Together, we can foster a sense of community and compassion that truly embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me, whether in small gestures or grand actions. The journey is far from over, and your kindness fuels my determination to make a positive impact. Let us walk together into a future filled with hope and gratitude.
