Liberal HBO host John Oliver voiced his deep concerns about the state of America during his recent appearance on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert. However, he made it clear that he is committed to staying in the U.S., declaring he would be ‘going down with the Titanic’ rather than fleeing back to the U.K.
The host of the popular HBO political commentary show “Last Week Tonight” spoke candidly with Colbert about his newfound U.S. citizenship. Despite his reservations about the current political climate under the Trump administration, Oliver affirmed his decision to remain in the country. “Oh, no, I’m sticking it out. I’m going down with the Titanic,” he stated emphatically.
The comedic duo reminisced about Oliver’s previous appearances on the CBS show, particularly his last visit on the eve of the 2024 Election Day. They both reflected on their anxieties leading up to the anticipated outcome of Trump’s return to power. Colbert admitted, “Cards on the table, by the way, I don’t remember anything we talked about because I don’t think I was listening to a word you said.”
To this, Oliver humorously responded, stating that Colbert had a ‘haunted expression’ during their prior discussion, as though he were witnessing the ghost of future devastation.
Oliver characterized the present moment as a notably challenging time in history, particularly with Trump in the White House. Colbert queried about Oliver’s decision to stay in America in light of the contentious leadership. Oliver elaborated on his analogy comparing America under Trump to the Titanic.
He referenced the famous band that played aboard the doomed ship until its final moments, saying, “I know there might not be life rafts available, but I’m tuning up. Gentlemen, it’s been an honor playing with you tonight.” This metaphor highlighted his dedication to remaining in America, despite the turbulent waters ahead.
The interview delved into the first four weeks of Trump’s second administration, with Colbert sarcastically remarking, “exactly what you thought but worse than you could have imagined.” Oliver concurred, expressing incredulity over recent events, including the participation of TV personality Dr. Phil at an ICE raid. He remarked, “Dr. Phil makes as much sense there as he does in a psychiatrist’s office,” capturing the absurdity of the situation.
Throughout their conversation, Oliver acknowledged a silver lining in the form of public protests against Trump’s controversial policies. He reflected on witnessing protests against the so-called Muslim ban in 2017, expressing hope in the activism displayed by everyday citizens.
Oliver quoted an unnamed Department of Justice lawyer who had opposed the ban at the time. The lawyer shared how the demonstrations strengthened his resolve, stating, “He said seeing people occupy those airports – seeing the protests was really useful to him in terms of energizing him and also making them feel that they were acting on the people’s will.”
Oliver emphasized the significance of activism, suggesting it is essential not only to vote but also to actively engage in demonstrating one’s beliefs. He remarked, “You can send a message. You don’t have to wait just to vote. It’s valuable sending messages, even if that message is, ‘F— this s—.'” Oliver’s call to activism resonates, urging individuals to express dissent and take action in the face of adversity.
As Oliver navigates his role as both a comedian and commentator, he remains focused on using his platform to highlight issues and inspire change. His loyalty to America, despite its current challenges, speaks volumes about his commitment not only to his new home but also to the ideals of democracy and justice.
In an age marked by division and political strife, Oliver’s remarks serve as a poignant reminder that the good fight is worthwhile. By engaging with the struggles of society, he encourages others to join him in the endeavor of making a positive impact.
