Three migrant teenagers face serious charges in connection with the tragic fatal stabbing of a 49-year-old homeless man in Chicago over the weekend, according to law enforcement officials.
Wuinayker Rodriguez-Vasquez, aged 16, has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder relating to the incident that occurred early on Sunday morning. He attended a detention hearing on Tuesday, where a judge mandated his pre-trial custody, as confirmed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
In addition to Rodriguez-Vasquez, two 14-year-olds have also been charged. One of them faces first-degree murder charges while the other has been charged with armed robbery. Both appeared in juvenile court on Monday and remain in custody.
Authorities revealed that the victim did not have any prior contact with the teenage suspects.
Trio of Suspects Linked Back to Venezuela
All three suspects are reportedly from Venezuela. The Department of Homeland Security indicated that records suggest Rodriguez-Vasquez crossed into the United States in September 2023, near Eagle Pass, Texas. Upon arrest, he and his mother were released.
Assistant State’s Attorney Todd Kleist noted in a court filing related to the stabbing that Rodriguez-Vasquez had a documented encounter with Texas law enforcement in 2023 categorized as an “alien inadmissibility” case. Notably, Rodriguez-Vasquez has no prior criminal history documented in Illinois.
Details of the Attack Emerge
According to prosecutors, the stabbing incident occurred at roughly 5:45 a.m. on Sunday in the Chicago Loop area while the victim was sleeping beside his belongings, including a skeleton mask and his cat.
A group containing Rodriguez-Vasquez and the two younger teenagers allegedly approached the victim. Prosecutors stated that Rodriguez-Vasquez concealed a knife in his sleeve, while another teenager wielded a metal rod. When the group approached, one of the teenagers grabbed the victim’s mask and fled. Upon the victim’s stand-up, Rodriguez-Vasquez reportedly kicked him.
Following this, one of the 14-year-olds allegedly struck the victim before Rodriguez-Vasquez is accused of stabbing him in the back, resulting in the victim collapsing on the pavement.
This shocking attack, described as “mob style,” was captured on surveillance cameras, reflecting a disturbing blend of violence and recklessness.
Medical Examination Confirms Homicide
The victim was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Medical examiners later determined that a stab wound to the back was the cause of death, and they ruled the manner of death as homicide.
After securing surveillance footage showing the suspects, police were able to detain the teenagers. Rodriguez-Vasquez was discovered with a knife on his possession, and he was subsequently identified by both his mother and another group member.
During the investigation, prosecutors asserted that Rodriguez-Vasquez was depicted in various stills post-incident, exhibiting provocative behavior, such as displaying a knife and making stabbing motions while wearing the victim’s skeleton mask.
Law Enforcement’s Perspective on the Incident
A source from the Chicago police department expressed that this incident reflects an exceptionally brutal and senseless act against an innocent homeless individual, noting that some suspects appeared to laugh following the attack.
The tragic event highlights pressing issues, including youth violence and homelessness in urban centers, prompting calls for deeper investigation and community outreach.
