THE BRONX, N.Y.— The CEO of a prominent pregnancy care center organization has expressed deep worries about the stability of pro-life services as Zohran Mamdani, an outspoken democratic socialist, prepares to assume office as mayor in January.
Rev. Jim Harden, CEO of CompassCare, an anti-abortion medical network headquartered in Buffalo, New York, articulated his concerns in an interview with Fox News Digital. He stated, “We have significant anxieties regarding Mayor-elect Mamdani’s plans to regulate pro-life pregnancy centers in New York City.”
Leading pregnancy care centers in Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten Island, Harden recently published an op-ed titled, “Zohran Mamdani Vows to Shut Down Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers.” In that editorial, he voiced apprehension over the potential consequences of Mamdani’s proposed policies.
During his campaign, Mamdani pledged to “protect” New Yorkers from what he called deceptive practices by pro-life facilities. Harden remarked that Mamdani’s campaign materials claimed that these centers misinform patients, particularly regarding abortion services and safety.
Harden mentioned Mamdani’s proposal to enforce Local Law 17, which he described as a consumer protection regulation. This law aims to impose strict requirements on pregnancy centers, ultimately affecting how they operate.
In a document titled “Trump-Proofing NYC,” Mamdani outlined a vision for reproductive rights that raises further concerns. It includes a commitment to tackle misinformation spread by Crisis Pregnancy Centers. The plan suggests enforcing Local Law 17, which would require these centers to disclose information about the qualifications of their staff and the services they offer.
Additionally, the proposal aims to enhance the city’s Abortion Access Hub, significantly increasing funding to assist individuals seeking abortion services. Specifically, it aims to double funding to $2 million to facilitate better access for all New Yorkers, including financial support for those living outside the city.
Harden cautioned that enforcing Rule 17 could impose substantial restrictions on pregnancy care centers. Centers may be forced to display mandated information in prominent locations, detailing what services they do not provide, such as abortion.
In a statement, Harden stressed that Rule 17 could infringe upon the First Amendment rights of these centers, compromising their ability to communicate their mission effectively.
CompassCare operates three pro-life pregnancy centers, strategically located in Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Harden expressed confusion about Mamdani’s stance on abortion, noting his Islamic background, which traditionally prohibits the practice. However, Harden also recognized Mamdani’s socialist affiliation, forming a complex and uncertain political identity.
Mamdani has consistently denied being a communist, pushing back against assertions made by various political figures, including former President Donald Trump. Diverse Islamic perspectives exist regarding abortion, with some interpretations categorically opposing it unless the mother’s life is in jeopardy.
Harden, who has dedicated years to the pro-life movement, indicated a concerning lack of alternatives to abortion within New York City. He stated, “We find ourselves significantly outnumbered in this discourse, with very few options available to women.”
Harden underlined the importance of the services provided by his organization, including pre-termination evaluations and basic OB-GYN care. These services are offered entirely free of charge, providing critical support to women in need.
If Mamdani pursues his agenda to limit the activities of pro-life pregnancy centers, Harden suggests profound repercussions for women throughout the city. Hard-hit areas like The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island could face a severe reduction in accessible care options.
Harden emphasized that limiting the presence of organizations like CompassCare could deprive women of ethical alternatives to abortion. “Most women do not genuinely desire an abortion. Rather, they often feel trapped into that decision, believing they have no other options,” he stated.
The mission of CompassCare focuses on empowering individuals to consider alternatives to abortion. Harden’s organization aims to alleviate the pressures faced by women, emphasizing that their support services are meant to inspire hope and provide real choices.
In response to the potential challenges posed by Mamdani’s administration, Harden reiterated his commitment to serve the community and uphold the options available to women seeking reproductive health services.
In a follow-up request, Fox News Digital reached out to Mayor-elect Mamdani for his stance on these pressing issues. The growing tension around pregnancy care centers reflects a larger national conversation about reproductive rights and healthcare access.
