Rare Oarfish Makes Surprise Appearance on Mexico Beach, Captivating Visitors

Beachgoers at Playa El Quemado in Baja California Sur, Mexico, were treated to an unusual sight when a shimmering oarfish surfaced in the shallow waters. This encounter marked a rare daytime appearance for the often elusive deep-sea creature.

Robert Hayes, a beachgoer who filmed the encounter, described the moment. He noted that the oarfish swam towards them, lifting its head above the water by a couple of inches.

Despite efforts to guide the fish back into the ocean, it repeatedly returned to the beach, showcasing its striking, flat body and iridescent silver color. “We redirected it three times out to the water, but it came back each time,” Hayes recounted.

The Fascinating Nature of Oarfish

Known scientifically as Regalecus glesne, the oarfish is characterized by a long, flat and tapering body that can reach lengths of up to 36 feet. Generally, this remarkable fish resides in deep waters, typically between 650 and 3,200 feet deep, according to the Florida Museum.

Another beachgoer who identified the fish expressed his fascination, stating, “This is amazing, it’s the smallest one (oarfish) I’ve ever seen.” His enthusiasm reflects the rare opportunity to encounter such a majestic creature in a beach setting.
