Andy Garcia Commends Taylor Sheridan’s Maverick Vision in the Entertainment Industry

Andy Garcia, the star of Paramount+ series “Landman,” believes that audiences are increasingly drawn to Taylor Sheridan’s television universe due to its authentic and refreshing portrayal of life. Garcia portrays Gallino, a cartel boss in the second season of the show, and he has high praise for Sheridan, calling him a true maverick of Hollywood.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Garcia emphasized Sheridan’s unique artistry, stating, “I think Taylor is a maverick in the traditional sense of the word. He is an auteur who possesses a distinctive talent for dialogue and character development. His viewpoint on the world resonates through his characters, making it refreshingly relatable for viewers.” He explained that this distinct narrative style is part of why Sheridan’s work is so well-received.

Realism Rooted in Truth

Garcia noted that Sheridan hails from a generation of creators motivated by a commitment to authenticity and independence, especially in an entertainment landscape that has become increasingly commercialized. “His shows embody a sensibility that reflects the influences that inspired him and many of us in the industry. These days, it seems such originality can primarily be found in independent cinema, although producing independent films has become immensely challenging,” he commented.

Behind the Scenes of Landman

Sheridan’s “Landman” takes its inspiration from the podcast “Boomtown,” shedding light on the Permian Basin oil boom in West Texas during the early 2010s, a transformation driven by advances in oil drilling techniques. The show centers around the character Tommy Norris, portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton, who operates as a “landman”—a pivotal figure in crisis management for an oil company named M-Tex.

The cast is packed with notable names, including Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Jon Hamm, Jacob Lofland, and Michelle Randolph. The eagerly anticipated second season premiered on November 16 on Paramount+.

A High Standard of Production

Garcia expressed admiration for both Sheridan’s dedication to the craft and the direction of the series by Stephen Kay. “The production quality is exceptionally high on this show,” said Garcia, known for his role in “Ocean’s 11.”

He highlighted Kay’s background as an actor, which offers significant advantages to the cast. “Having someone who understands our process is invaluable, and filming with three cameras for every setup ensures a smooth and dynamic workflow that is visually stimulating,” Garcia explained. He added, “The unique angles and edits created a swirling visual experience that heightened the excitement during shooting. It’s truly a privilege to work in such an environment.”

A True Texas Experience

Filming in Texas further contributed to the authenticity of the series. Garcia remarked that the experience in the Lone Star State resembled classic Hollywood sets. However, he humorously noted the challenge posed by the intense heat, stating, “The temperatures can soar to 105 degrees at times. Although I grew up in South Florida, where humidity reigns, the Texan heat presents a different challenge altogether. In Florida, it rarely gets that hot, but the humidity level is quite significant.”

Insights from On-site Experiences

Previously, Thornton shared with Fox News Digital the insights he gained about real-life oil workers while filming “Landman”. He noted that engaging with the oil industry sheds light on the lives of many individuals within that world. Thornton commented, “One surprising observation was learning about the myriad of people, including ex-cons, who toil in the oil fields. They often seek to rebuild their lives while providing for their families; the financial incentives can range from $120,000 to $180,000 a year, which is hard to find elsewhere.”

He added that many workers are willing to put their lives at risk to support their families and that the financial rewards make the challenges worthwhile.

The Rise of a Creative Powerhouse

Sheridan’s journey as a prominent screenwriter gained momentum in the late 2010s with successes like “Sicario,” “Hell or High Water,” and “Wind River.” His partnership with Paramount resulted in mainstream acclaim, particularly with “Yellowstone,” which solidified his standing in the industry.

In addition, he has introduced several television shows within what has become known as the “Taylor Sheridan Universe,” which includes titles like “1883,” “1923,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Tulsa King,” and “Special Ops: Lioness.””>

A Lifelong Passion for Storytelling

Throughout his life, Sheridan has been involved in ranching and currently resides on a ranch in Texas. In a 2023 interview, he reflected on his path to success, saying, “My dream was to escape the struggles of being a failing actor in West Hollywood. The original plan was to become a big star and return to the ranch to work on films with directors like Martin Scorsese at my leisure.”

However, he acknowledged that this path did not materialize as expected. “I was merely a fair actor, and acting was not my true calling,” he remarked with a chuckle. Drawing on his experiences, Sheridan noted that persistence in one field does not always yield success, stating, “If after 20 years of struggling as an actor you find it difficult to get roles, perhaps you should reconsider your chosen path. However, the first script I ever wrote— the pilot for ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ in 2011— led to numerous opportunities with major networks and agencies, showcasing that every failure can eventually lead to success in another arena.”
