Tragic Crash Linked to Illegal Immigrant with California Driver’s License Raises Questions

An illegal immigrant, identified as Rajinder Kumar, is alleged to have caused a fatal crash in Oregon that resulted in the deaths of two people. Kumar, who is reported to have been issued a commercial driver’s license by California’s Department of Motor Vehicles under Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, entered the U.S. illegally and received work authorization from the Biden administration.

Details surrounding the incident surfaced in a statement from the Department of Homeland Security on Monday. Kumar, 32, faces charges of criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment following the tragic event in Deschutes County on November 24.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. when Kumar’s semi-truck jackknifed, blocking both lanes of U.S. Highway 20. A Subaru Outback subsequently collided with the truck, leading to the deaths of the driver, William Micah Carter, and passenger, Jennifer Lynn Lower, as confirmed by DHS.

Legal Status of the Accused

As the investigation continues, DHS has issued a detainer for Kumar’s arrest. He remains in custody at the Deschutes County jail as authorities prepare for further legal proceedings. Given that Oregon is classified as a sanctuary state, officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement are making efforts to secure his custody if he is released.

Kumar entered the United States illegally near Lukeville, Arizona, in November 2022. Following his entry, the Biden administration allowed his release into the country and approved a work authorization for him in 2023. His California-issued commercial driver’s license came soon afterward, which raises questions about the processes in place for issuing such credentials to undocumented individuals.

Recurring Issues with Illegal Immigrants and Driver’s Licenses

This incident is not isolated, as several recent tragic accidents have involved illegal immigrants who obtained driver’s licenses in sanctuary states. In August, another illegal immigrant named Harjinder Singh, also from India, drove a semi-truck that made an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike. That maneuver resulted in a collision that claimed the lives of a minivan driver and two passengers.

Ongoing Concerns

After Singh’s arrest, ICE lodged an arrest detainer against him for three counts of vehicular homicide. Furthermore, DHS reported that in August, another illegal immigrant, Partap Singh, caused a multi-car pileup in California while driving a commercial semi-truck, resulting in critical injuries to a young child.

In another incident in October, DHS reported that Jashanpreet Singh, also an undocumented immigrant, caused a tragic crash in California that resulted in three fatalities when he was driving under the influence.

Government Officials Respond

Following the November crash involving Kumar, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin extended condolences to the families of the victims. She expressed profound concerns regarding the driver’s legal status and the implications this incident has for public safety.

McLaughlin emphasized the need for changes, stating, “Rajinder Kumar, a criminal illegal alien from India, was released into our country under the Biden administration and issued a commercial driver’s license by Gavin Newsom’s Department of Motor Vehicles. How many more senseless tragedies must take place before sanctuary politicians stop allowing illegal aliens to dangerously operate semi-trucks on America’s roads?” She assured that ICE would continue efforts to remove illegal immigrant truck drivers from highways.

Calls for Accountability

The questions surrounding this tragedy extend beyond Kumar’s individual case. They point to broader issues concerning public safety and the protocols in place for issuing licenses to undocumented immigrants. Advocates and critics alike are calling for renewed scrutiny of immigration policies and driver’s license issuance practices, particularly in states with sanctuary laws.

Fox News Digital attempted to reach out to Governor Newsom’s office, the California Department of Motor Vehicles, and former President Joe Biden for comments regarding these events but received no immediate responses.

Looking Ahead: A Call for Change

As discussions continue regarding the implications of this incident, the need for dialogue about immigration policies and their ramifications on public safety remains urgent. Advocates argue for a reevaluation of sanctuary policies that could potentially endanger lives.

Amidst this complex issue, the focus must remain on preventing further tragedies and ensuring that road safety is prioritized for all individuals. Advocates for reform stress the importance of responsible immigration policy and accountability in the licensing of drivers. The ongoing conversation continues to highlight the delicate balance between compassion for immigrants and the necessity of stringent safety measures on American roads.
