In a recent episode of ‘The Daily Beast Podcast’, comedian Zarna Garg shared insights into why some members of the Indian-American community resonate with former President Donald Trump. Her remarks highlight concerns regarding the immigration policies of President Joe Biden’s administration, as they relate to the experiences of legal immigrants.
Zarna Garg emphasized the unique position of Indian immigrants in the United States. She explained that most Indian families navigate the complex legal immigration process over many years. This often includes extensive paperwork and numerous verifications. Consequently, the concept of illegal immigration does not align with their experiences. Garg remarked that during Biden’s tenure, it was perplexing for many in her community to observe what seemed like a lack of urgency regarding immigration issues.
“When asked about the immigration situation, we felt confused and frustrated. Our relatives have been waiting for years, sometimes over a decade, to come to America legitimately. Simultaneously, it appeared that others who were not following the rules were somehow reaping rewards,” Garg stated during her interview with host Joanna Coles.
Originally from India, Garg immigrated to the U.S. and began her comedy career unexpectedly in 2019, urged by her daughter Zoya to perform at an open mic night in New York City.
Immigration Discontent and Presidential Critique
Despite her recognition of the challenges Trump highlighted, Garg noted her discontent with his immigration policy execution. She stated, “I don’t think he should be doing things the way he’s doing them. I have a problem with his execution, but many issues he raises are real and mustn’t be ignored.”
Compounding this discussion, her daughter Zoya commented on Trump’s image as a successful businessman. Zoya reflected on how many in the Indian community admire the former president’s business acumen, citing it as something relatable and aspirational.
She expressed, “Seeing Trump as a business figure resonates with us. For many Indian families, business success is something we strive for and respect deeply.”
Biden Administration Under Scrutiny
Garg returned to the topic of Biden’s policies, elaborating on the disappointment felt within the Indian-American community. She discussed the significant role of work visas and the challenges faced by immigrants during this administration.
“Many of us who came here with employment-based visas kept asking ourselves, what is actually happening at our borders? The chaos was concerning, and we wanted answers,” Garg said candidly.
Perceptions Abroad and Trump’s Popularity
While Garg acknowledged that international perspectives on Trump can be critical, she pointed out that many people from other countries, especially in Europe, often question the situation at the U.S. border.
She recounted, “People abroad love to criticize Trump, and some of it is warranted. However, they are still surprised by the ease of access at our borders. They often ask, how can this happen in America when their own countries enforce strict immigration controls?”
At one point in the podcast, she boldly stated, “The Indian community loves Trump. It is what it is. We don’t share the same grievances that many other Americans do.”
Cultural Context and Political Affinity
Garg humorously attributed her community’s support for Trump to the political landscape in India. She noted, “Our politicians back home are often seen as corrupt. So, witnessing a politician in America with a booming personality and a somewhat similar demeanor doesn’t shock us; it feels familiar.”
Garg has previously shared her journey with Fox News Digital, expressing pride in her ability to voice her experiences in America. She has said, “This country welcomes voices like mine, which is something I believe would not be possible in India. That’s what makes America unique and exceptional.”
Shifting Political Landscape Among Indian-Americans
A recent survey by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace indicated that Indian-Americans have historically leaned towards the Democratic Party. However, the data from October 2024 revealed a notable shift. Support for the Democratic Party decreased from 56% in 2020 to 47% in 2024. In contrast, the percentage of Republican-identifying respondents remained relatively stable, while the number of Independents grew significantly.
This evolving political sentiment within the Indian-American community raises questions about future election dynamics and the factors influencing these changes.
