FIRST ON FOX: Representative Henry Cuellar, a moderate Democrat from South Texas, has shared his thoughts on receiving a pardon from former President Donald Trump. In a recent conversation with Fox News Digital, Cuellar discussed the implications of the pardon and clarified his political allegiance.
Cuellar expressed deep appreciation for the pardon, stating, “I’m certainly very thankful to the president, thankful to God. It was a very difficult time for my family and me, but we came through this.” His sentiment reflects the emotional toll the situation took on him and his loved ones.
When asked if he agrees with Trump’s assertion that he was a target of the Biden administration, Cuellar responded emphatically, “Absolutely, absolutely.” He explained that his criticism of the Biden administration’s border policies made him a subject of scrutiny.
Cuellar recalled, “I appeared on national TV over 150 times, most of which was to critique the Biden administration. I aimed to shed light on border issues that directly impact my constituents.”
Cuellar noted that the timing of the pardon raised eyebrows, especially as it occurred just 40 days before an election, during his contentious primary battle which saw opponents spend over $20 million against him. He remarked, “The timing was very suspect, particularly given the legal opinions against my indictment and the subsequent proceedings that took place.”
Regarding his political future, Cuellar confirmed he does not plan to switch parties. He stated, “Nothing has changed. I’m a conservative blue dog Democrat. I will continue to work with the president on areas of agreement, as I have in the past.” His words illustrate his intent to maintain his party affiliation while being open to bipartisan efforts.
Cuellar emphasized, “As a conservative Democrat, I’m good where I am. Yet, I am committed to being bipartisan. Some members of Trump’s team have already reached out to discuss potential collaborations, and I look forward to working together on pressing issues.”
Cuellar underlined his determination to focus on his responsibilities and move forward in his role as a congressman. He expressed gratitude for the pardon, saying, “We will strive to achieve positive outcomes for our constituents. Our work continues, and we are ready for the challenges ahead.”
Trump publicly announced Cuellar’s pardon earlier this week, emphasizing it as a “full and unconditional pardon” for both Cuellar and his wife, Imelda. The indictment, which came from the Biden administration, accused the couple of accepting $600,000 in bribes from an energy company and a Mexican bank.
The allegations arose shortly after Cuellar became vocal against the perceived shortcomings of Biden’s immigration policies.
In his announcement, Trump criticized the Biden administration, stating, “For years, the Biden administration weaponized the justice system against their political opponents. Congressman Cuellar’s case is a clear indication of this wrongful targeting.” Trump denounced the actions as un-American and reaffirmed his support for Cuellar, declaring, “Henry, I don’t know you, but you can sleep well tonight — Your nightmare is finally over!”
As the 2024 election cycle approaches, Cuellar has warned that immigration and border security issues will dominate political discussions. He urged Democrats, including President Biden, to devise practical solutions concerning border issues. Cuellar remarked, “It’s in the president’s best interest politically to come up with a solution on border security.”
Following the pardon, Cuellar expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to thank President Trump for his tremendous leadership and for taking the time to look at the facts. This decision clears the air and allows us to move forward for South Texas.”
He concluded, “This pardon gives us a clean slate. The noise is gone, but the work remains, and I intend to meet it head-on. Thank you, Mr. President, and God bless you, as well as the United States of America.”
