Seahawks Navigate QB Dilemma as Sam Darnold’s Injury Keeps Fans Guessing Ahead of Clash with 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks face a significant uncertainty as they prepare for their NFC divisional round matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. The primary concern centers around the health of starting quarterback Sam Darnold.

During Thursday’s practice, Darnold reported feeling discomfort in his oblique while throwing. Subsequently, he decided to halt his throwing session. The 28-year-old has not thrown a football since the incident, leaving the Seahawks unsure whether he will be fit to start on Saturday, according to reports.

In the absence of Darnold, backup quarterback Drew Lock has stepped in and received first-team reps over the past two days. If Darnold is unable to play, Lock will take the helm at quarterback.

Assessing Darnold’s Status

Darnold expressed caution regarding his condition, stating, “I didn’t want to push it. It wasn’t the day to push it.” He emphasized that he opted to focus on rehabilitation. Darnold remains optimistic about his chances of playing, declaring, “I feel like I’ll be ready to go for Saturday.”

This incident marks the first time Darnold has had an issue with his oblique, and he will continue receiving treatment as game day approaches. When asked about the possibility of missing the game, he replied with confidence, indicating that the likelihood of sitting out is very low.

The Season So Far

In his inaugural season with the Seahawks, Darnold has showcased impressive performance, leading the team to a remarkable 14-3 record. His efforts earned the Seahawks the NFC West title and the number one seed in the NFC playoffs. Over the course of 17 games, he has completed 67.7 percent of his passes, amassing 4,048 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. This outstanding performance has secured him a second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

Should Darnold be unable to take the field against the 49ers, it would represent a considerable setback for the Seahawks. Drew Lock’s experience this season has been limited; he has appeared in five games and attempted only three passes.

Drew Lock’s Experience

Lock has a history as a starter, having started five games for the New York Giants last season, where he recorded a 1-4 record. His stats include a 59.1 percent completion rate, with 1,071 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. Over his career, he has accumulated 28 starts, with a record of 10 wins and 18 losses.

Despite the uncertainty regarding Darnold’s health, offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak expressed confidence in Lock’s capabilities. He stated, “Drew’s been really impressive throughout OTAs and training camp and in his role. We have a lot of confidence in Drew. We brought him here for a reason.”

Game Day Approaches

The Seahawks, seeded at the top of the NFC, will face off against the sixth-seeded 49ers on Saturday night at 8 PM ET. This matchup is expected to be intensely competitive, underscoring the importance of Darnold’s health as kickoff approaches.

As game day nears, fans and analysts alike keep a close eye on Darnold’s progress. His ability to play could significantly influence the Seahawks’ strategy against a tough opponent like the 49ers.
