The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran has issued a serious warning to American citizens currently in the country. The embassy advises all individuals to leave immediately as the situation continues to deteriorate.
According to reports, over 2,000 individuals have lost their lives in the ongoing anti-government protests. An activist group, the Human Rights Activists News Agency, highlights that 1,847 of the deceased were protesters, while 135 were members of Iran’s security forces. Other organizations suggest that the actual death toll may be even higher.
The embassy’s website states, “Leave Iran now. Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.” It encourages Americans to consider land crossings into Armenia or Turkey if it is safe. Furthermore, the embassy emphasizes securing a safe location if leaving is not an option. It advises maintaining a stock of food, water, medications, and other necessities.
The embassy notes that protests across Iran are escalating and could lead to violent confrontations. Increased security measures, including road closures, disruptions in public transportation, and internet blackouts, are currently affecting daily life in the country. The government has also restricted access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Airlines are limiting or canceling flights to and from Iran, with several suspending operations until further notice.
The protests, which began late last month, were initially driven by grievances from shopkeepers and bazaar merchants regarding soaring inflation and the dramatic drop in the value of the rial, which lost nearly half its worth against the dollar in the past year. Inflation reached alarming levels, exceeding 40% in December.
As dissatisfaction spread, the movements quickly escalated to universities and smaller towns, where young protesters clashed with security forces. The combination of economic hardship and political repression has fueled a growing desire for change.
The U.S. embassy warns that U.S.-Iranian dual nationals must exit Iran using Iranian passports. The Iranian government does not acknowledge dual nationality and may view dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens. This policy increases the risk of questioning, arrest, and detention for U.S. nationals. Even the mere presentation of a U.S. passport can result in serious consequences.
Travelers should be aware that Turkmenistan’s land borders are currently open. However, U.S. citizens must obtain special authorization from the Turkmen government prior to approaching the border. U.S. citizens seeking to cross into Azerbaijan from Iran should also exercise caution; entry restrictions often apply during periods of heightened tension, as seen in past conflicts between Iran and Israel.
The U.S. government lacks diplomatic or consular relations with Iran. As a result, the Swiss government serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests in the country. This fragile relationship complicates any potential assistance for American citizens seeking assistance.
In December, prior to the escalation of protests, the U.S. State Department had issued a “Level 4 – Do Not Travel” advisory for Iran. This advisory underscores the risks of terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrests, and wrongful detention of U.S. citizens.
In light of the ongoing violence and unrest, the U.S. embassy’s warning serves as a stark reminder for American citizens to prioritize their safety. The call to evacuate comes amid a backdrop of civil unrest that has shown no signs of abating. Americans still in Iran must carefully assess their situations and remain vigilant.
Foreign Policy analysts emphasize the importance of heeding such warnings, as the situation in Iran remains volatile. Americans must prepare for swift action should the need for evacuation arise.
As protests continue to unfold, the international community watches closely, underscoring the importance of solidarity with those fighting for rights and liberties within Iran.
