China and Russia’s Global Reach Put to the Test

Both China and Russia have aimed to position themselves as key players in Africa and Latin America by offering military equipment and infrastructure partnerships. However, their lack of intervention during U.S. actions against Venezuela raises questions about their reliability as allies. According to experts, the implications of potential U.S. strikes in Iran, alongside recent actions in Venezuela, would underscore America’s military strength and further illustrate that near-peer adversaries like China cannot effectively compete when the U.S. chooses to exert its power.

Craig Singleton, a senior China fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, noted that while Beijing may condemn any U.S. military actions and call for restraint, the underlying reality is stark. He remarked that partnerships with China fail to provide substantial protection when the U.S. opts to act decisively.

Singleton added that the execution of two complex military operations in quick succession would reinforce China’s internal assessments: the United States wields unmatched military might and is willing to utilize it when possible risks are managed. This combination heightens respect for U.S. power, even as it cultivates concern within Chinese leadership.

Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, echoed Singleton’s viewpoint. He emphasized that nations like Iran and Venezuela, which have leaned towards China and Russia, are starting to recognize the limitations inherent in those alliances.

Venezuela, for example, has forged close ties with Russia and has acquired Russian military hardware. Yet, when it faced U.S. aggression, Russia was conspicuously absent in defending Caracas. A military strike on Iran would only further emphasize the shortfalls of Russia and China as true supporters during crises.

Trust in Alliances Under Scrutiny

In Cancian’s view, the inability of Russia and China to safeguard their allies stems from their lack of a global military presence. While they possess formidable regional capabilities, they do not have the extensive reach that the U.S. maintains worldwide.

U.S. military infrastructure, including bases globally and a Navy that operates across various oceans, allows it to project force effectively. In contrast, neither China nor Russia has demonstrated such global capabilities, which leaves their allies vulnerable.

Trump’s Considerations on Military Action

President Trump is still deliberating over potential strikes against Iran. He indicated on January 11 that his administration was exploring robust options while expressing concerns over ongoing violence against demonstrators in Iran.

While Trump acknowledged that incidents of killing in Iran were decreasing, he has not ruled out military action entirely. His administration insists on holding Iranian authorities accountable for their actions against protesters. On Friday, Trump remarked that he had postponed military action due to Iran’s decision to cancel executions of over 800 individuals.

The Broader Implications of Violence in Iran
