Burger is a Cuban-inspired creation born from a collaboration between Indiana quarterbacks Fernando and Alberto Mendoza and local restaurateur Ed Schwartzman.
This initiative aims to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research, honoring the brothers’ mother, Elsa Mendoza, who has been battling the disease for nearly two decades. The impressive effort showcases how family, food, and football can come together for a vital cause.
Alberto Mendoza expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support his mother’s fight against MS. He remarked that raising awareness through this initiative has been an incredible experience.
Fernando Mendoza leads the undefeated Indiana Hoosiers as they prepare for a potential national championship victory against the Miami Hurricanes. Many fans who may not afford game tickets will still join the celebration from Bloomington, savoring the Mendoza Bros. Burger at BuffaLouie’s.
This burger symbolizes how college athletes can leverage name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities for meaningful causes, rather than for mere personal gain. Fernando highlighted the negative perceptions surrounding NIL but emphasized that their initiative demonstrates a more constructive approach motivated by altruism.
He expressed, “NIL can be viewed negatively, but for us, it’s about inspiring change and supporting a cause that deeply impacts our family.” The focus is squarely on a mission that resounds personally.
Fernando clarified that the proceeds generated from the sale of each burger directly support MS research. He firmly believes in the importance of this cause not only to his family but to the broader community dealing with MS.
The Mendoza Bros. Burger is available at BuffaLouie’s, and its counterpart, the Mendoza Bros. Cubano sandwich, is sold at Gables Bagels, both owned by Schwartzman. Every purchase contributes significantly to a cause that holds profound significance for the Mendoza family.
Schwartzman remarked that a portion of every sale, specifically 20%, is designated for MS research, with him personally matching that amount to amplify the impact of their fundraising efforts.
Tim Coetzee, president and CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, commended the collaboration between the Mendoza brothers and Schwartzman’s restaurants. He noted it represents a beautiful testament to their mother, Elsa, and the power of community in addressing critical health issues.
The partnership has proven fruitful, with efforts generating over $150,000 for MS research. Coetzee expressed deep gratitude towards the Mendoza brothers for leading such a significant initiative that shines a light on the importance of supporting the MS community.
Schwartzman almost overlooked the initial outreach from the brothers’ management, mistaking it for a monetary request. Upon realizing their genuine intent to connect with a local restaurant for a crucial cause, he decided to lend his support.

Unlike traditional burgers, it features smashed double patties, grilled onions, Swiss cheese, mustard, and a slice of hot ham, all sandwiched between a buttered brioche bun. Fernando insisted early in the development process that the burger should bear the name Mendoza Bros. Burger, ensuring that the initiative remained a family affair rather than focusing solely on his individual achievements.
The entire Indiana football program has embraced this initiative, creating a buzz around the collaboration’s impact. Kicker Josh Placzek shared that the Cuban breakfast sandwich has become a staple in the team’s post-workout routine, highlighting its deliciousness and the cause it supports as a perfect blend of flavor and purpose.
Placzek described the initiative as a reflection of the Mendaza brothers’ character and dedication to raising awareness for their mother’s condition. He praised their efforts, stating, “The Mendozas are using their popularity and talent to bring attention to a disease that affects their family.
